The real poem and it’s meaning always brought tears of joy that we had such a noble nation. That was before I learned the extent of the decimation of the 1st nation peoples. That was way before we gained a xenophobe in a position to wield great power to turn away the poor, the needy and the people who need asylum to join us. Also I want to thank Brian Carroll, whose great grand parents probably came here to escape from a deadly famine, for having such an up to the hour comic strip.

Remember when they didn’t have to warn parents to send their children out of the room during a presidential address?

Ooh! My Irish and German ancestors came about that time as the “old immigration”. Then my Polish ones came in 1907 as the “new immigration”, which led to restrictions in the 1920’s.

20 million refugees. Another 40 million “displaced in their country”. In my opinion these figures are probably an under-count. This is one (of many) problems about which I despair.

Only one solution I can see and it will never happen: A lowering of the world’s population to around one billion. No, I’m not advocating genocide. I’m advocating a world wide Chinese style one child policy. So many major (and minor) problems would be eliminated or mitigated with fewer humans on the planet. Never going to happen. Hence the despair.

BTW, I’ve consciously done my bit by having no biological children. My granddaughter will be the main beneficiary of that.

Sure, the world could get its act together to fully cooperate in a spirit of peace, and goodwill. That’ll happen any time now. Humans have demonstrated that so many times in the past.

While our leaders may have backwards, unpleasant opinions and policies, America, on the other hand, still manages to live up to our promise. America is still a land of hope where an immigrant can come and do well. America proves how strong it is by surviving the cancer that is DJT.

Again, I am astounded by the brilliance and rapidity of our wonderful mentor. BRAVO! BRAVO!

One final caveat, however— you may need to take care, as Mz Emma may rise from her grave to avenge this wee bit o’sacrilege. ;-)

Miss Lazarus is buried just off Woodhaven Blvd. in Queens, NY. When the earthquake strikes that unhappy borough, it’ll be the result of her (and Justice Benjamin Nathan Cardozo, buried nearby) turning over in their graves.
