Depends. A lot. On how it’s done. Humans do thrive on the right amount of challenge, but they do not thrive on starvation, lack of housing or lack of education.
Well, it would be helpful if ANYONE on the right could provide evidence of systemic dependence, apathy and abuse; something other than Ronald Reagan’s one example of a welfare queen.
There’s more evidence to support systemic racism creating a forced dependence on welfare systems, but you ignore that. There’s even more evidence showing that welfare support systems help most people get over challenges in their lives and move on to self-sufficiency.
But when your politics are built on hate, the above narrative doesn’t work.
That hasn’t been a problem in countries that have a guaranteed income supplement. What can be a problem is companies reducing wages and counting on government to top them up.
I don’t think people like Goodwynn actually read or listen to their fellow right wingers. He probably doesn’t know that Universal Basic Income is an idea supported by Libertarians, like Andrew Yang and Charles Murray. It’s also an ancient idea, the Romans did it. Social Security is UBI for the old.
Cut fossil fuel subsidies, some have been in place since it was a new industry; Manchin insisted in getting more money for his family’s coal fortunes. Stop agriculture subsidies, most go to corporate farms and too many members of Congress suck those up, plus “celebrity” farms.
From what I’ve heard, it was a right-wing free market economist who came up with the concept. He called it negative income tax. The idea was to give everyone an actual chance at success. Not very right-wing today, though.
Oops: Maga House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accidentally posted the House GOP platform on line. He was supposed to announce the party’s fluff “Commitment to America” propaganda, but instead, a multi-page doc appeared online on his website. An hour after New York Times reporter Annie Karni busted them, his site was locked down and accessible only with a password. What a surprise! They plan to double down on all the crap that has them in hot water now. They want to cancel the prescription drug cost reductions and declare SS and Medicare as “discretionary funds”, subject to renewal by majority vote every five years. They also want a nationwide ban on abortion and most contraception with a “Life Begins at Conception” law. They also plan on helping to insert Maga extremists to disrupt polling places to help Maga politicians scream “Voter Fraud”, giving Maga state legislatures absolute power to change election rules and results at their whim. And of course, “investigate the investigators” and impeach President Bident (for no particular reason).
What’s even more pathetic is the lack of new ideas and actual policies. There are no actual “governance” policies, it’s just the opposite. The fundamentally anti-democratic Maga Republican party is also fundamentally destructive and totalitarian. They don’t build, they break.
Sounds like Al and his Maga commenters here would prefer the poor, the sick, and the elderly (you know, the “takers”) are unworthy of humanity and compassion, should live on the living room couch of a relative, push shopping baskets full of their pathetic belongings in the streets, dumpster dive for food, or bang on the back doors of churches, begging to be taken in so they can die with some kind of dignity.
Yeah, boy, that’ll show ’em!

So, if your Maga Mob boss (and all his family) has finally been exposed for what he is. Are you good with that?
Nope. It’s all about the Democrats. Same ol’ same-o.

I guess Goodwyn believes there is NO dependence, apathy, or abuse existing in America.
But, if actual people were given money, we be overrun with all of those things.
.
I guess Al has never heard reports of very rich people spending a LOT of money on drugs, with all the consequences that implies.
That is, unless, you know, he is LYING. (Not that that would ever happen)

If there was universal guaranteed income, there couldn’t be abuse because everyone qualifies.

This is such an old, worn out pretext blaming the poor for being poor. Only it used to be the ‘welfare queen’. This is such overused garbage.

No one has talked about guaranteed basic income since Andrew Yang in the 2020 campaign.
I guess the Idea Bin is empty, so it’s time to resort to strawman arguments.
