This is more common than you’d think. Not that they ever said as much, but the consensus seems to be that Return of the King’s clean sweep at the Oscars was in large part as recognition that they’d pretty much ignored the first two films purely because they hate blockbusters

John Wayne’s Best Actor Oscar for “True Grit” is generally thought to be in recognition of his entire body of work.
