You’ll never get to sleep unless you close your eyes! When I have trouble falling asleep I close my eyes and try to breathe evenly and eventually I fall asleep.
I know how she feels, I have hardly slept the last 2 days. My sister, who is in a nursing home 2 hours away, has been having problems with her heart rate, going too high then too low for about a month now and they have been trying different meds without success and Thursday it was around 150-160 all day so they decided to have her go to the hospital for cardaic work-up to see if her AFib is acting up or if it is something else, well the hospital in the town closest to her nursing home is a small hospital that doesn’t have a heart center or cardiologist on staff so after having her in ER for 12 hours with no changes they transferred her to a hospital right across PA state line into NY and they have her in cardaic ward and doing a lot of testing on her. I have been so scared and worried about her so I have been crying a lot since Thursday evening and every time I try to sleep I just fall asleep and start dreaming something bad happens and wake up crying and not being able to go back to sleep. I slept about 4 hours Friday and 2 hours Saturday and I am exhausted and have a migraine. Please keep my sister, me and my parents in your prayers, we really need the extra prayers seeing that we can’t go see her.
First, I have the TV on and listen to specific shows – often children’s shows – that are not exciting enough to attract my attention, but interesting enough to keep my attention. (They moved “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum” to another time and also did not have a second season. Lately it has been “Bluey” (Australian children’s show about a blue heeler and her family and friends – she was actually in the NYC Thanksgiving parade as a balloon this year).
Then when none of this has worked – I run through the list of monarchs of England/Great Britain (and the numbering sure helps). Then the Presidents of the USA, followed by the first ladies (which is not completely the same as a list of their wives). Then the multiplication tables, followed by the addition tables, followed by both in reverse (starting with 9 instead of 1). Then the states of the USA in alphabetical order, then same again with their capitals. Then I stare at the ceiling and hope to fall asleep.
Most recently the township is redoing the pipes in the two streets across the street from us. So, by this time is around 6 am and just as I maybe falling asleep – they start working on the pipes (yeah, 6 am start does not make sense to me either). Then at 7 am the noise starts (we live on a main road) school buses picking up children, people starting their cars and driving to work, people walking dogs which bark, newspapers being delivered and so on.
Hopefully at some point I actually fall asleep. Neither of us has ever been early riser (well, maybe when we were babies) nor early to go to bed. But since Covid started and at the start it did not matter when we were awake or sleeping, we go to bed at 3 am (takes me a couple of hours to fall asleep after same) and wake up at around 11 am.

I was told if you can’t sleep, think the color gray, it definitely puts you to sleep.

Are you felling frisky Arlo? Reach under the bed and pull out that holloween mask, maybe it’ll work again.

If she’s anything like my wife, there are sighs that keep the husband awake until he asks.

Arlo must have very sensitive skin, if he can feel her eye lids moving.

He asks, just as she was finally drifting off… (sigh)

“And it’s all YOUR fault. I don’t know specifically how it is just yet but when I do figure it out, boy, are you going to be in for it.”

There’s often that one sound, be it a cough, a sneeze, or a question, that happens JUST as you’re finally falling asleep.
