Today I looked in the mirror, marveled at the bags under my eyes, and realized it’s pollen season. (A lot of sneezing but no runny nose. Odd.)

I’m sure Darryl and Wanda from "Baby Blues’ could make the same joke.

Arlo should be pretty grateful that seasonal allergies are determined by your immune system instead of by the size of your honker.

I wonder the same thing. I have allergies but not so much in the spring as in the fall when the weather is changing. It’s at the same time as my asthma flares up the worst.

It’s not the size of your receptor so much as it is the sensitivity.

I know it’s only a comic. But, wow! She could fit her whole hand up his nose.

With a schnozz that big he could have allergies and still not be congested.

Just what is Janis doing to Arlo in the second and third panel? Is the tactically confirming the fact that Arlo’s nose is bigger than hers? She should be able to just look and confirm that, unless her eyesight is so blurred from the allergies….but truly, she should know the size difference by now!

My allergies are also in a mess. They seem particularly bad this year.

A large nose allows for wider passages, which still support breathing even when the membrane is swollen. (A reasonable explanation, not supported by any fact I know.)

I never had problems with allergies until I got in my 50s (with the exception of something in the desert in Idaho which kicked my butt when I was stationed in the Navy out there – yes, the Navy)

It took me 45 years to develop an allergy. For many years now I wonder what it is that makes me sneeze violently and my eyes itchy. No test I took was yet conclusive. It usually starts in late February and keeps on until late May.

I’m happy when I find something I’m allergic too. On the whole, there’s very few things that I am.

I have a number of fears which I have had since I was a child – such as animals. I learned early one when someone had a dog and was pushing it on everyone to pet that if I said that I was afraid of dogs I would be told “But he’s a nice doggy, he won’t hurt you.” I quickly learned to say instead that I was allergic to dogs and then the dog would be moved elsewhere in the house or at least it would not be pushed on me to pet it.

Understand that I am NOT nasty to animals. Of course if one child in a family is like me, another one LOVES animals. So my sister got a dog (you can imagine how much I loved this). We would be outside or somewhere and some child would be afraid of sister’s dog. My mom or my sister would start the “But he’s a nice doggy.” I would say NO and take the dog elsewhere. (I also used to throw food at my sister’s hamster’s cage when she forgot to feed him and dropped food into her fish tank – ditto. I am very much in favor of animals being treated well – just terrified of them.)
