Funny story: I have a friend who plays trombone. When we were in middle school, we were in the auditorium seeing this really painfully boring history play. I was struggling to stay awake, but my buddy is just passed out completely in his seat. He started snoring, and it sounded just like his trombone! I kid you not, it was like he was tuning his instrument right there. I had to wake him up because our teacher was staring daggers, but it was hilarious. His girlfriend sitting 3 rows away turned around and saw, and quietly died of laughter for the remainder of the play.

Zoe, if you’re looking for annoying, your choices are cymbals and recorders. I heard a stand-up comedian (who used to be a music teacher in NYC) refer to the recorder as “The Devil’s musical instrument”.

I was away the day they handed out instruments and got stuck with trombone.

I really wanted clarinet. All the popular girls got clarinet or flute.

Oh well, Cathy Jones was away two days and got stuck with the tuba, so it could have been worse! lol!

Think of all the fond memories you’ll have of playing the trombone around an evening campfire in the woods. Perhaps a Harmonica, albeit the uniforms aren’t as nifty.

I got put on trombone because the grade school band leader needed more players for that instrument. Strangely enough, the husky boys got put on tuba ….

One of my favourite sounds is the trombone and the French horn played together. They marry very well and sound magnificent.

The drum Zoe, the drum. A good drummer can even drown out the trombone, besides your arms are too short to reach the spit valve.

Don’t freak over a horn, Wanda – I raised a drummer. Which, while loud, was not nearly as painful as my baby sister’s violin lessons; nothing on earth sounds as pain bad as a poorly played fiddle…….

    Which reminds me:

What’s the difference between a fiddle & a violin? Beer stains.

What’s the difference between a fiddle & a violin? One has strings, the other one has strangs.

    What’s the difference between a fiddle & a violin? It’s a fiddle when you’re buying it, a violin when you’re selling it.

    What’s the difference between a fiddle & a violin? Neither one’s a guitar, so who gives a….crap?

Drums are louder, and you don’t have to lift them to play them in an orchestra, and you don’t have to carry them to and from school because school orchestras already have them there, all set up.

My son played drums and my daughter played the flute. My son’s wife played clarinet and so did their daughter, but their son played trumpet. My daughter’s daughter played flute, also. The rest of my grandkids are like me, and they play the radio.

I was a small kid. At the time, I was thinking if I took up the instrument, I would want to play the “tuba”.

I put “tuba” in quotes because it was actually a Sousaphone. I didn’t know the difference at the time.

Wait until she finds out a trombone doesn’t always play loudly, but according to the volume indicated on the music.

Years ago I read that one trombone played “full blast” could produce a louder sound than the rest of the orchestra put together. Even including percussion and the rest of the brass. It makes a slight amount of sense: The slide trombone, which is what we usually think of, has such simple “plumbing” that nothing interferes with the sound production.

Trumpet/Cornet is louder than a Trombone. I used to play the Cornet and the music teacher was always was telling me to take down a notch or two.
