Letās see. Dad walks through door, no Hobbes. Mom steps in, no Hobbes. Calvin carefully sticks his head in, looks both ways, sets one foot inside,āā
MARG I still canāt find the Grand Canyon in Afghanistan in my 1976 atlas. Are you sure the CIA didnāt drug you? And about Lāil Abner, although Iām much to young to remember, Al Capp created that guy with the raincloud over his head (told you I was too young to remember) after me.
I wouldnāt worry about Hobbes being home alone, afterall heās a tiger. I can see Hobbes finding a credit card in Dadās drawer and ordering a tuna pizza and watching the wildlife shows on television!
Good morning to all! Letās see. Momās mad at Dad whoās bored out of his gourd and Calvinās mad at everybody. Then Calvinās worried as Mom slips into weeping and Dad slips into sleep. What is Calvin in the last panel? Thoughtful? Or simply being quietly evil. Anyway, it IS Dadās fault.
Why is it Dadās fault? Calvin forgot Hobbes, he was dragging his feet getting ready to leave so Dad (on the highway so probably a fair distance from home) was already running late, and they donāt hold weddings up just for one couple and their 6 year old! So the fault is Calvinās. Children do need to learn cause and effect and taking responsibility for their actions. Too many no longer have been taught that, to the detriment of themselves and anyone they care to āinteractā withā¦
Maybe this is the lesson he needs. This is how kids learn responsibility, by enduring the consequences of their mistakes (as long as theyāre not life- or limb- or health-threatening, of course).
I love Calvinās mind. āI think Iāll let Dad go into the house first.ā
Brewster and then Calvin this morning. Two coffee spurts already. How much do new keyboards cost?
Spammers invading comics is like Calvin being an angelā¦it just shouldnāt happen! I actually put up the strip in my classroom because it SO reminds my teenage students that they arenāt the only evil imps in the world!
If I remember this segment correctly, it goes into some real grieving by Calvin before itās over. Right now, heās thinking the first person to go into the house will be eaten, and dadās the most expendable.
Church weddings and funerals have a lot in common????
What is it with the bashing of marriage today, people?!? First over at 2 Cows and a Chicken and now here. Honestly, some of us seem to have been permanently seared in our minds by Andy Capp and the like.
That rant saidā¦
(stomps off for his morning CocoMocha in hopes itāll calm him down)
I love the interaction of these three characters here, too. Very plausible, unfortunately, for some people.
At six years old I wouldnāt have needed a Hobbes necessarly - I couldāve pulled a Spaceman Spiff arc and done just fine. Unless, of course, I missed my beloved Snowy (a teddy bear) at such times more than I remember.
My husband and I are celebrating our 21st anniversary in two weeks - weāre HAPPY!!! I guess we got it rightā¦.and OUR marriage is NO funeral - guar-on-teeeedā¦!!!
Actually itās Hobbesā fault. If he hadnāt been sound asleep with only his tail showing, none of this would have happened. But somehow, I donāt think heās suffering much for his mistake.
Hey, maybe thatās the overall message of C&H:
While itās unfair that sometimes we suffer for othersā mistakes (which is bad), by necessity that means that sometimes we DONāT suffer for our own mistakes. Which is good!
Rise22 - CONGRATULATIONS! Excellent post! We celebrate our 25th in August and, yes, through all the rough times, we realize that each other is NOT the enemy - usually itās external forces. It just provides the opportunity to teamwork through the situation.
Congratulations to both Rise22 & treBsdrawkcab I and my husband had 29 years last April. I agree with marriage comes good and bad. I told my husband doesnāt seem like weāve been married that long just seems like yesterday. Well for us sickness is coming my husband this time has to have a heart check up heart catheterization. And where we live there are only two places that does a dye injection for the heart. Gonna be a long day. Not sure if I will be working at my pt. This is a switch Iāve had two repairs surgeryās now he sees about his heart. At least my husband doesnāt smoke.
Calvin relax get your mind off Hobbes he might leave your comic collection alone and weddings donāt last forever dad you should know that. Let mom have some time to enjoy the festivities.
We celebrate our 21st in August. We said the first 99 years are the honeymoon stage ā¦ then 30 seconds to reconsider, then the next 99 year āleaseā begins ā¦LOL.
You just have to resolve and commit that this is going to work and you will both work it out. (We both decided divorce was not an option for usā¦) Yes, there are times you donāt āloveā each other, but you are COMMITTED to each other. You work on your own feelings and improve them, and the other person responds. You donāt try to āchangeā the other person - change yourself instead. When you are BOTH committed, it makes a world of difference. If it is only one of you, I truly sympathize and hope you can work it out. And even if you cannot, do not bash or abuse yourself emotionally (or physically), just do better the next time around. But never jump into anything, at least not without doing some prelim counseling first (& not 8 minutes before the ceremony.)
OK, rant aside. I miss my wif while she is visiting MIL with our kids up in Los Angeles (Iām in San Diego) ā¦ glad I never had to get a traveling job. Looking forward to chasing her around the house later ā¦ ;-))
Actually, a real Christian marriage and a good Christian funeral both do have a lot in common: hope and joy and anticipation. However, we so rarely see them that way, for some reason. Which is our lossā¦
And I agree: Calvin has no interest in the wedding and other such mushy stuff.
Iāve been married 38 years now. When we took our 2 & 5 year old boys to a co-workerās wedding, the oldest waited till that hush as the bride gets to the altar and the music stops and the congregation starts to sit, then loudly asked, āIs she having a baby?ā Then when HIS oldest was 5, she was a flower girl in a cousinās wedding. Zoey got up to the front and luckily one of the ringbearers provided a distraction as Zoey had pulled up her skirt & was, shall we say, ādigging around.ā Her mom hissed at her to behave and she loudly announced, āBut mom, I have a wedgie!ā (The ringbearer had not been told at rehearsal that there would be a huge flash going off in his face as he entered the sanctuaryāhe threw the pillow-and-ring high into the air and turned tail and ran. They never did get him to come back for the ceremony. The other ringbearer ended up carrying both pillows/rings.)
Jacob is right. Iāve seen Calvin with combed hair, and it makes him look weird and feel rotten. So things could be worse for him.
Dad seems to be wishing he had a friend like Hobbes too right about now - or, any friend! I love the way Watterson goes to the trouble of making Mom and Dad be real people. The three of them in the last frame are picture-perfect.

If you have to ask why mom is crying at a wedding ā¦ then you couldnāt possibly be a woman or youād understand!!!
Kab Buch: I know what you mean! My husband and I will celebrate 22 years of wedded bliss this coming December and it seems like only yesterday we got married too!!!!! BTW: Good luck to your husband on his cardiac cath procedure.
