Hobbes is wearing swim trunks in the pool, but remains unclothed when he is not in the pool. LOL!

Panel 7 is how I spent much of my summers as a kid. Not digging up the front yard, but searching for fossils on our farm and in nearby rock quarries.

I mentioned yesterday that today’s strip might be the one based on Watterson’s Summer memories. I said that this strip would be reprinted either today or next Sunday and it has turned out to be today. Watterson explains in The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book, “This is how I remember Summer. When this strip captures real moments without making them saccharine, it is truly gratifying.”

Hobbes in today’s strip is largely based on Bill Watterson’s brother Tom. This is shown by the early panels in which we see Calvin and Hobbes getting out of bed together, having breakfast and reading the same comic together and going out of the house together as well as the final panel with them back in bed.

This one reminds me of my summer vacations with my brother and his friends. We only went in to eat and to tell our parents where we were going. Then had to come in when the street lights came on. Aah, memories of freedom in the late 60’s early 70’s.

The scientists are wrong about summer days being longer. The classroom days are the longest ones.

I remember summer days like that, quite happily, even if they are in the distant past. Remember running everywhere (who walked?) just because it felt so good?

Half the kids I know spend summer days inside playing video games. Not to be crotchety, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll have lovely memories of that someday.

Excellent example of the joys of a really fun day for Cal – or any kid. I never did all that at once but I remember days that came close.

A long time ago, in the chow hall, we used to take a glass and fill it with a squirt of every option on the soda machine. We called it a “suicide”. It wasn’t bad and it tasted a little bit different every time.

Fireflies! I have only a vague memory of seeing them – I must have been 3-4 years old. Last week my wife told me there are lightning bugs around Lake Mary, just southeast of Flagstaff! On the west side of town, the Museum of Northern Arizona reports firefly sightings in summer. I missed the season but we will have to keep alert next summer.

It will be sad when Calvin outgrows Hobbes. We all know Hobbes is going to end up in the attic. I just hope Calvin takes him on his life journeys if only in the attic. Gone, but not forgotten…
