A few years ago DIL noticed the house was quiet. A little too quiet, so she called out, “Chris, where are you?” From somewhere in the house came the innocent reply, “Nuffing.”
I remember this from when it was last reprinted five years ago. Someone commented, “Only probably. Doesn’t she know her son.” Another reader commented, “Look behind you!” A reader replied to that, “You’ll see a stuffed tiger running.”
This story arc is also bringing up more discussions over whether or not Hobbes is meant to be part of Calvin’s imagination. As I have said many times, I started to question whether or not Hobbes is part of Calvin’s imagination when I read my first book collection – it was the second one published “Something Under The Bed Is Drooling”. I noticed two strips in that book which surprised me by showing Hobbes alive when he was completely alone. I started to look out for strips which show Hobbes on his own to see whether he was always shown as alive then.
About a year after I first read “Something Under The Bed Is Drooling”, I read the story arc before this one where Calvin left Hobbes behind. Hobbes appeared under the bed sheets with only part of his tail visible as we saw a few weeks ago. I still largely thought of Hobbes as a doll then so I went back to assuming Hobbes to really be a doll. As some readers have commented, there are signs in this arc – which followed the one about Hobbes being left behind – that indicate that Hobbes is NOT a doll but I did not notice them when I first read this strip.
As I have also explained before, I did not learn that Watterson himself didn’t see Hobbes as a doll until April 1992. That was when I read his famous quote, “I suspect he is more real than any kid would make up.” I have been told recently by another reader that Watterson was commenting on Hobbes arguing with Calvin and “wrongly” expressing a view that kids do not imagine their imaginary friends arguing with them. I still agree with Watterson that Calvin would not imagine someone who keeps arguing with him, playing tricks on him and making sarcastic comments. Also, Calvin often misses Hobbes’ sarcasm.
I really laughed hard at this one. How each panel of a window with the car, then Calvin and Hobbes chasing the car while mom’s calmly talking to herself.
Oh, no, Mrs. Mom. Calvin has been in his room all day! Yep, all day. He has no idea why your car is suddenly a pile a smoldering scraps at the bottom of the hill! He was nowhere near the scene at the time!

It was the same way with my daughter when she was that age. When things got quiet she was up to something.

I´m not kidding…. I just saw the same thing happening in real life a couple of days ago, with the car of my neighbor. My guess is Calvin was around.

Interesting now Hobbes is anthropomorphic when someone else besides Calvin is in the same comic panel… I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

We only see Hobbes in action when no one but Calvin sees him. Mom does not look out the window and that’s why Hobbes is in action.
