I haven’t had much experience with large herbivores, but I spent enough time on a farm that I can picture several extremely unpleasant events that can happen in proximity to a cow.
Calvin seems to be missing the point that Hobbes is afraid of the cardboard box whether it is a time machine, a duplicator or a transmogrifier. The fact that Hobbes is more afraid of the cardboard box than of dinosaurs will be made again later in this story arc.
Yes, it was a carnivore. Calvin told his mother the dinosaur “almost ate [them].” Unless there’s another story arc where they made the same trip but tangled with a herbivorous dinosaur (which sounds odd);
Lots of fun can be had in a large cardboard box with a bit of imagination. When I was about 6, my dad brought home a cardboard box from an appliance store. I colored one side to resemble (to me anyway) the nose of an airplane, another to be the nose of a submarine, another a car and the other a tank. I spent hours playing in that thing until one day I forgot to drag it up onto the porch and it got soaked in heavy rain. The things you remember from a your childhood…
I’m kinda certain it’s not the box that causes the troubles, it’s Calvin’s over active imagination that finds a manner to make things exciting. How many other people can claim to have been attacked by a dinosaur after stepping into a box? Is there a such a thing as a kid having too much of an imagination?
I love his imagination. Cover open = time machine. Cover closed pointing one way = duplication. Cover closed pointing the other way = Transmogrifier. Cardboard boxes always made the best toys for kids in olden days.
All these comments remind me of a time of a misplaced daughter at home. We just noticed how quiet it had gotten, but an initial search for her ended up empty. She wasn’t old enough to open the doors to the outside, nor was she one to play hide-n-seek without notice, so a more thorough search ensued. Eventually she was found inside a box (about the size of Calvin’s) located in the living room, sound asleep, with an afghan blanket pulled over her. It was well known she enjoyed playing in the box, though the thought never came up she thought of it as a place to nap, too!

And plain crazy!

I really like that second panel. You don’t usually see Hobbes drawn with quite that much detail.

so odd, usually you cannot keep a cat out of a box.

1 of the many versions of a box in Calvin and Hobbes

Back then, herbivores ate fruit shaped like Calvin’s head.

Plenty of non carnivorous animals can kill you.

Where I live, cardboard boxes are picked up on Saturdays. Calvin is lucky that today is only Monday.

Hobbes is the only feline who doesn’t love cardboard boxes. Of course living with Calvin, he has good reason.

Kudos to a kid who can have fun with a plain cardboard box. Now kids need a game platform, a controller, a comfy chair and no imagination

Come on Hobbes. Don’t you know a Time Machine when you see one?

If he jumped into the box with Jimi Hendrix he would be psychodilysized in a purple haze. Are you experienced?

Hobbes usually is very subtle in his reactions to Cal’s efforts. This one got a straight shot.

Hobbes is right! For all we know, you could end up in the path of a Triceratops stampede!

The box is productive of excellent story arcs, whether open at the top, crawling in at the bottom, or going in through the side!

Apparently Calvin learned that the dinosaur was an herbivore after the last time, since he was panicking with Hobbes too.
