in this day and age i don’t think i would do that… the front door might wind up being crashed through by manic police who shoot before asking any questions or even looking to see what is inside the house.
I still have a landline (in addition to my smartphone), but the only calls I get on it are people with unidentifiable accents wanting to sign me up for Medicare.
When I bought my first answering machine in the late-1980s, not only did it put an end to me taking messages, it also put an end to me answering phones.
And when my housemates were not thrilled that I was answering phones and screening calls, the answering machine also put an end to me having housemates, too, and made my life very peaceful.

Wherever Calvin is, there just has to be a crime scene.

Ambulance and police would be coming to Calvin’s house if the person that called know their address

Just a shot in the dark, but it gives you shooting pains?

Now, maybe Mom and Dad will splurge on call-waiting. BTW, if this strip was ever rebooted, would they still have a land line??

In the days before caller I.D. as well. The answering machine was great too. My outgoing message was a barber quartet singing something like….
“We are sorry we are not in.
I’m afraid you are out of luck.
Please leave a message.
If not you can take a flying. Beep!"

He’ll have even more fun explaining this one than he did with the last fiasco involving Roselyn.

When the guy finally connects with Dad, this will come back to haunt Cal.

We have a landline, and it came in handy with the recent cellular outage that affected most of the country (and our long/frequent power outages).

That stunt just made the caller’s day a bit more surreal and likely prompted a police response.

EMS should be at your door shortly!

Not funny. Today you could have the scared caller sending you a SWAT team in response.

He could have just said, “I’m not his secretary. Please call back later.”

I always thought it was creative and funny how Calvin popped a balloon to try and simulate a gunshot.

I had a landline through the cable company, the downside was if the cable was out, no phone, no electricity no phone. Stupid.
