BTW, Bok, this is the classic Reagan playbook. When he was elected governor of California, the first thing he did was to push through legislation to raise the sales tax by 25%.
He used that money to finance income tax rebates the next election year.
Republicans will likely spend the next 2 years with endless investigations just like the Democrats gave us. Demopublicans.
Then if they threaten SS or Medicare, which people have paid into for decades, that’s a losing issue. Then if they “shut down the government,” which never happens as the DC Swamp never shuts down, they lose too. Sigh.
Surely you lefties are not against a consumption task. The IRS codes are a plate of spaghetti. A GST would eliminate the need for a IRS. People without the means to consume wouldn’t and would pay no tax. Isn’t that what you want?
Sales taxes are the MOST regressive common form of taxation: Rich folks spend a small fraction of their income on things with sales taxes, poor folks spend nearly 100% of their income on such things. Because they NEED them.
I wonder if many people realize how much they are paying out in compound interest, especially on credit cards. On a related subject, I also wonder how much total interest is paid annually versus total taxes.
The progressive countries of Western Europe have National sales taxes in the form of the V.A.T. The revenue collected goes to fund universal healthcare and a host of other social programs. To offset the negative financial effects on the poor domestically, an income tax rebate can be offered in the form of a credit to those on the lower end of income scale. The US treasury would collect a huge amount of money from foreign tourists who not file a domestic tax return and therefore would not receive the credit back. Make sense ?
Elizabeth Warren slams Republicans for creating ‘economic chaos’ to protect the rich
Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday took aim at the Republican Party for creating what she called a “manufactured crisis” as a potential fight over the debt ceiling looms, slamming the GOP’s threats to public spending as the party works to make it even easier for the wealthy to avoid paying taxes. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the Massachusetts Democrat said the Republicans are actively trying to “wreck the economy” to protect the wealthy.
This would TAX poor folks who pay little or no income tax. The legislators (Repub and Demon) would add the Sales tax and inadvertently forget about repealing regular income taxes. “Oh, Sorry…how did we miss that?”
As long as it sucks every possible dollar from the proles the extremist right wing in the USA will be ecstatic. Just don’t even think about elimination of the SSI cap or increasing tax on capital gains.
I’m surprised to see this ’toon. Pleased. But surprised. Oddly the RW commenters are not going after Bok for suggesting there were bad candidates and that this is a bad idea.
Interesting how many commenters here are perfectly fine with regressive taxation, i.e. balancing the budget on the backs of the poor, and not a peep about getting corporations to pay their share from their profits.
Right wingers hate the concept of progressive taxation. They propose crap like flat taxes and sales taxes in their place — AS IF lobbyists and campaign contribution bribes would not result in favorable tax treatment for the same wealthy people who get it now.
Moreover, they are totally satisfied that wealthy people and patriotic multinational corporations pay a tiny percentage of their income and NO tax on their wealth.
They actually believe it benefits them personally — Trump Disciple analysis skills.
Kari Lake fires back at Ronna McDaniel for ‘acting like we put forth bad candidates’
Former candidate Kari Lake® lashed out at Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel for reportedly accusing some failed GOP candidates in Arizona of being poor choices for office. Lake brought up Mcdaniel’s remarks during a Tuesday interview with conservative podcast host Steve Bannon.

Many people make decisions based on tax code. For example, the Trump / Repub tax bill of 2017 put a cap on property tax deductions; this change was aimed mainly at blue states. People have chosen their home based on the local school systems funded by those property taxes.
Other changes the Repubs stuck in that bill – a tax cut for companies buying or leasing a private jet and Ron Johnson’s tax cut for pass-thru corporations that was for the benefit of his major donors.

Yes, that’s what they’re doing. Except their #1 bad idea, which will sink them entirely, is the whole “Gut social security and Medicaid” thing.

Sales tax favors the rich. They have the resources to absorb it. Fairly simple math really.

You would need a so-called flat tax of about 30% to fund the federal government including SS & Medicare.

Neither consumption taxes nor income taxes are good ideas. Taxes should be based on net worth. Income can be manipulated too easily.
