It may not have been a literal fruit at all, for that matter. The Bible frequently uses fruit in a metaphorical and symbolic sense so to teach complex lessons in an easier to understand manner, and there’s clearly a lot of symbolism in the story of creation. Calling it a “fruit” may just have been a symbolic simplification of a much more complex idea.
