That last panel is the important message. I’m glad to see it:

“Do we have to talk about this? it makes me so sad.”“Yup. Ignoring this stuff is what got us here in the first place.”

    That exchange reflects so much.

Non-violent protest. Did not work. Spotlighted the deep-seated overt evil in some places and drew attention, but did not strongly move anyone to address more than the mechanical symptoms.

Violent protest. Did not work. Aside from the image of people burning their own property, for which there are sound psychological reasons, it made the protesters appear less than rational.

Sending young people, Black and White, to be beaten and murdered for simply helping someone vote didn’t work.

Prosecuting old rednecks didn’t work. Prosecuting police did not work. Forcing integration didn’t work. All of those things did accomplish things that needed to be done. But they also tended to make people imagine they were therapeutic against the disease. They were not.

Compelling entertainment producers (including the news, which is also entertainment) to consciously promote actors of color didn’t work. Everyone knew why they were there, even when we know they should have been there in the first place.

I have no formula, no process I can describe. I’m not sure there is one. But I know that recognition of the situation and a wholesale determination to counteract it will get us better. And what a thing. What a consummation devoutly to be wished. What a work for those who might muster the will to become their own greatest generation.

So sayeth the white southern policeman who is tired of being ashamed of his nation.

Remember children, assault, arson, looting, graffiti and vandalism are NOT protected speech under the 1A.

Blocking traffic, blocking public streets, parks and sidewalks, preventing citizens from getting from point A to point B is NOT protected peaceable assembly under the 1A.

Special emphasis on “peaceable”. You are NOT protestors. You are criminals violating MY CIVIL RIGHTS.

MLK marched during the day. Discouraged marching in darkness. Think about it.

Yes, the black community is certainly justified in being angry about a 15 year decline in police involved shooting of black people. (Roland Fryer, if you want to check out his paper on the matter.)

To all the liberal elitists on this board, and Gordon himself:

I live in Minneapolis. Let’s see you still have this attitude after YOUR neighborhood is burned down.Let’s see it after YOUR four year old daughter’s life is threatened at the end of a loaded gun simply because her skin isn’t black enough.Let’s see it after YOUR car (the one you saved for ten thousand hours to be able to afford) is broken into and looted, because you “didn’t deserve it”.Let’s see it after YOUR house is threatened, and YOU’RE told that defending it with a gun is a felony, but the people trespassing with Molotov cocktails aren’t doing anything wrong.Let’s see it after YOUR office closes down and YOU lose YOUR job, the one you got because you worked your tail off in high school and throughout college to be able to afford, because the city in five blocks every direction was ransacked and they’re not willing to stay in the city anymore.Let’s see it after the stores, restaurants and all other businesses in YOUR neighborhood close, putting everyone out of a job, either because the building no longer exists, or the Democratic council, in its infinite wisdom, decided having police protection to defend civilians was somehow worse than having mobs. And let’s see it after YOU’VE spent YOUR life reaching out to minority communities of all kinds, in church functions, volunteering, befriending, listening, and giving away money, only to have it thrown back in your face because someone somewhere calls you “racist” simply because of your skin color.
