A long time ago one of my aunts gave us one of those things. The girls were frightened by it. I placed it where no one could get to it for safe keeping. One morning I found it dismembered in a heap of stuffing on the floor outside of their room. I was told that one of the cats, (Mrs Mouseripper) had gotten up on that shelf to sleep and knocked it off. One of the doggos had played with it and thus the end result. Never replaced it. They are creepy.

I grew up without one of those things. We were just told “Santa is watching thru his little crystal snowball .” & that was it.

One of my teachers (second grade) had one in her classroom. students in the after school program would stop by and look to see if the elf had moved. She told them it left at night and would be in a different spot in the morning. As they never caught her moving it, I think the kinds believed her. They would never have considered the custodian would be the one moving it. It was great as she would have no idea where it was when she got there.
