Square headed screws (without pointy bottom) are often called carriage bolts and square or hex headed screws with a pointy bottom are often lag bolts.

I haven’t seen a square head machine bolt in a while. They were fairly common in machinery before the hex head became popular. The square head did make it easier to hit with a hammer though.

This IS a never ending conversation, save for eventual boredom/frustration. Being in the Auto/Truck industry for 45+ years, a bolt goes into a matching threaded [nut or equivalent]. A screw goes into a material only [wood, plastic, sheet metal, etc.] to acquire it’s clamp load without a nut. THEN come some exceptions. Just two examples are: Lag bolts, machine screws [which are actually “little” bolts, but screws must sound cuter]. But thank God this was harmless and not politics!!! {;-)

The threads are on the bolt just to take it out. Looks like left handed threads besides.
