I don’t know what the big deal is. Mail men (sorry, people) push envelopes all of the time. Do we see them get any rewards or recognition?

Just for the record the phrase in The Right Stuff is “push the outside of the envelope”, not “push the envelope” as so many people seem to think (chapter one, page 45, in my copy of the book, is the first time Mr. Wolf used the phrase.
Pushing the envelope gets you nowhere – because it will remain stationery!
