One year at xmas I was sitting at the family table- having dooked the meal I was resting while everyone else filled their plates, and my niece, 8-9 years old came in and proudly said she had no veggies (she had carrots) I said “I know the brussels sprouts are pretty foul when they get cold but they’re ok while they’re hot. If you have one without being asked by your mother she won’t nag you about eating more.”

We shared a conspiratorial smile and she went back into the serving area loudly declaring :I’m going to have a brussels sprout!!!!"
