If the guy on the left wants people to work for him, he needs to pay them enough to pay for housing, afford their own food, get child care (if they are mothers or fathers that need to have someone stay with their kids), expect something for health care, and reasonably expect to work in safe conditions where they won’t get exposed to idiots that refuse to get shots or wear masks.

The guy that expects to work for them under slave conditions shouldn’t expect to stay in business unless they can convince the local correctional institution to provide people under a work release program.

Hmmmmm. Latest jobs report is 266,000 new jobs…….yet there are apparently 7,400,000 job openings (give or take) in the United States. Something isn’t right here.

Saw a McDonalds near me a few weeks ago offering sign on bonuses. A freaking McDonald’s.

Funny how.. if given a choice folk will not work for peanuts. Obviously giving folk a choice is the problem. Best you remove that and force those freeloaders to work or starve.. a win win either way as a good number are homeless and a blight on society.

Maybe they’ll finally figure it out. Those “burger-flippers” they belittle and claim aren’t worth decent pay? No burger flippers – no restaurant.

Didn’t 45 cause this in the first place. In Canada its a taxable benefit, not free money, but then again the USA is so far in debt from both parties spending habits…

While the cartoon may represent the current political environment, don’t we all expect things to get back to some semblance of ‘normal’ when the kids are fully back in school so parents can resume the jobs they were apparently happy to have pre-Covid?

In and Out Burger pays $17 an hour to start. They have no trouble finding employees.

Moscow Mitch voted down the min wage 17 times and voted for his own pay raise 7 times.

Republicans are responsible for wages so low it is not practical to work there.

There is heaps of excellent journalism on this topic that’s appeared over the last few weeks. The shortage of restaurant workers is complex. Many on the fashioning this into a weapon against a president who has been hard to attack. The more nuanced story is far more interesting.

It is a heck of a lot more difficult to just survive than it was for previous generations. When I graduated from high school in 1962. my husband and I bought a three bedroom two bath house and two pretty good cars within the next three years, and paid for them with a job that he got right out of high school. I didn’t work, few married women did, and those that did so by choice. Now it isn’t a choice for most women, unless they don’t mind living in poverty.

Since that time, the productivity of the American worker has skyrocketed, and we are generally acknowledged to be the best in the world. And, we are producing goods that we can’t afford to buy.

Most of the value that we are producing is going to the 1%, who use that money to buy politicians who make laws that insure that they keep making most of the money, which they can use to buy more politicians, who will write more laws so they can make more money to buy more politicians and etc etc etc. If this is Democracy, somewhere the whole thing has gone seriously off the tracks. A young person told me a while back that I couldn’t really understand why their generation was so angry. What I actually don’t understand is why they aren’t rioting in the streets.

The extra unemployment pay runs out after a few months – some states are already cancelling it. Many states require ongoing proof that recipients are making honest efforts to find work, else they lose their unemployment pay. However, many states also do not require recipients to take jobs that they are not suited for, or jobs that pay less than what they had been making. That is to avoid employers taking unfair advantage of job seekers – offering poor pay and hours and conditions under the threat of having their unemployment cancelled.

Unemployment, even with the supplement does not pay that much. As we reopen the supplement will be dropped. So, reasonable people will be taking reasonable employment. An antiquated minimum wage is more of the problem, than less of the problem.

If everyone would get vaccinated, stay home or at least get tested for Covid when they get sick. Stay home if positive for Covid, then we could open up and stay open. You know, personal responsibility.

Note that employees in the poorly-paid food service sector are flocking back to work, despite the fact that in that sector the pandemic unemployment bonus has the biggest impact, i.e. would be closest to making it “worthwhile” to stay home watching TV.

And another thing: complaints about not being able to find workers (read: trained workers) is a commonplace in the recoveries from recessions—which the pandemic slump is, though an unusual one. AND at the same time there are likely to be supply bottlenecks, which retard the ability of businesses to get up and running.

Incidentally, in April more than a million jobs were added, in fact; the anaemic-looking (and anaemic in fact) tally of 250,000, or whatever it was in the “report”, is seasonally-adjusted; normally there’s a big employment surge in spring, not this time. (Saint Ronald was big on blowing off seasonally-adjusted jobs reports when the raw figures were more pleasing, which [blush] is just dishonest.)

A word to the wise: when Publicans cite statistics, check with a reliable source before coming to any decisions.

Henry got the memo.

This mentality stems from a carry over from slavery: the idea that “inferior” slaves wouldn’t work without some sort of whip – real or virtual in terms of poverty. It came into the Industrialization during and after the Civil War with immigrant labor. It’s part and parcel of that attitude. False, of course.

This is ridiculous! People want to work; however, no one can live/raise children on the pittance that is paid. PatJade said it very well.

Henry, you appear to not like the support that American Citizens are receiving due to the societal benefit of not spreading a contagious disease. Wonderful. The way to end it all would be to use your platform to encourage vaccination. Once everyone it vaccinated Uncle Joe’s Big Government won’t be paying people to stay at home.Ending the pandemic is up to you Henry.
