Way back in the antediluvian when I was working for a “big corp” and screening job applicants, I was taught that EVEN BACK THEN (around year 2K) it was illegal and also bad practice to ask people about things that are commonly associated with the tasks you want the new hire to do. For instance, you cannot ask them their height or weight, but you CAN ask them if they can repeatedly reach for and bring down packages of a particular weight from a particular height. You cannot ask them if they have extensive knowledge of a particular language unless you need them to work with people who use that language. Etc. and of COURSE you cannot judge their suitability by the color of their skin. Or stated gender. Or religious preference — though you CAN ask them if they are able to work on Saturday if they indeed MUST be able to work on Saturday in order to fulfill the job role.
Bottom line: This dialogue strikes me as being both incredibly stupid and far too likely to be happening in cop shops around the nation.
Ours is a strange and savage land. Last night, my (public!) TV station showed “The Alamo” – with John Wayne. The macho asininity was thick enough to walk on. The term “Republic” (never “democracy”) was ubiquitous. The faithful black “retainer” – (not yet “slave” in 1836 – because Mexico had already abolished slavery) was servile, yet loyal. And them fellers from Tennessee wuz jist a-fightin’ fer freedom under Col. Crockett. It were Inspirin’ ! But I digress..

If you run from the cops, they have a right to kill you. I think that’s fair. Don’t you?
