They still haven’t pledged to work for gun reform. The NRA is much more about marketing military grade weapons for the manufacturers than it is about hunting.
Funding for mental health and their attendant facilities has been decreased for a good while now. Just as Bush’s Defense Department sent memos to military doctors to downgrade diagnoses of PTSD because treatment is so expensive. (We don’t care if YOU think you have it. WE don’t, so fend for yourself.) Sometimes it costs more to do nothing.

There is enough blame to go around far as the release of mental patients go. The courts ordered patients who were not considered a danger to themselves or others be released in the 70s and 80s. Part of the problem was the conditions many of these people were kept under. They were basically warehoused without any real treatment or care provided. The Reagan Administration did cut funding for mental facilities in the 80s, which made it further difficult to take care of the mentally ill.-As for the Newton shooter, I hold the mother responsible for having a small arsenal accessible to a son she knew was mentally unstable. I have not heard any information about what kind of professional help he had received.-Ansonia,As for for Ruff’s comments regarding HOWGOZIT, Ruff is dead accurate. Read the comments HOWGOZIT has posted. Most of them are nothing but name calling without any facts or statistics to back them up. He has no idea what the Mother’s political leanings were. Taking into account she was from NH and a gun enthusiast, it might be she was rock solid conservative. Simple fact is no one has spoken about her politics that I have seen or read. The shooter’s mother may have been a survivalist. From Salon online:-Nancy Lanza, whose gun collection was raided by her son Adam for Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook school, was part of the “prepper” movement, which urges readiness for social chaos by hoarding supplies and training with weapons.
“She prepared for the worst,” her sister-in-law Marsha Lanza told reporters. “Last time we visited her in person, we talked about prepping – are you ready for what could happen down the line, when the economy collapses?”-http://www.salon.com/2012/12/17/nancy_lanza_was_a_prepper/?mobile.html
A little reality here – We had a ban on assault weapons. It was signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1994. When it expired in 2003 it was not extended. Obviously, Republicans don’t want to stop gun violence.
