At least the original Scrooge reversed course at the end of the story. Don’t see that happening much in the last 2 years. Seems even the sporadic and abnormal reduction in the national census doesn’t convince the skeptics of the dangers.
The deniers are still talking their rights. The liars are still talking government plot. The careless are still falling to the virus, despite warnings about mass gatherings. The gullible are still swallowing any thing touted as a cure. Some pols are throwing around their truths, like ping pong balls in a wind tunnel.
But there is hope and there are many examples of the good spirits of the age. Care providers are still fighting for people’s lives and reason — even as many are dying on the job. Charities are helping the new needy. Teachers are still trying to provide education, however difficult the effort. Drug companies are still improving their vaccines and trying to stay ahead of the next variation. Some pols are going against party lines to change public perceptions.
Perhaps all those good spirits will eventually win over the Scrooges before their final hours. I pray so.
