Teachers have been disrespected for far too long. People would claim that teachers get three months off, only work about six hours a day while claiming the teachers were overpaid. This doesn’t take into consideration the money that teachers pay out of pocket for supplies for themselves and students, class decorations and other things that they should not have to pay for the tax deduction for that is minimal. This ignores prep time, grading papers and tests before and after school stretching into the “summer break” at both ends.
When Covid hit and parents had to home school their children, teachers were called “heroes” and were highly respected – that didn’t last very long. The threats coming from parents at school board meetings is outrageous.
To advance in their career, a teacher usually needs advanced degrees and many districts require continuing education.
Florida’s “solution” to recruit veterans without any degree or experience in teaching is horrible. It is bad enough that police departments recruit veterans and consider them “pre-trained”, disregarding the difference between police work with the civilian population versus war zones. Imagine a veteran suffering from undiagnosed PTSD teaching a classroom of young children when they don’t have proper training and tools.
