Imagine a really bad solution to a non-existent problem and the government will find a worse solution.
At the original budget it was going to cost $500 for the projected ridership for the next 20 years. That makes sense. It has nothing to do with political parties and more to do with insanity from anyone who sees this as a viable project.

The U.S. has perhaps the worst rail system in the developed world precisely because the oil and auto companies spent billions to precent any improvements, by the RAIL companies that used the mineral estate they were GIVEN by the government to operate and maintain railroads in perpetutity, to become OIL COMPANIES!
The “red cars” in Los Angeles before WW II were hundreds of times more efficient than autos for commuting, which is why they were shut down and theire rights of way extending all the way out to Palm Springs were turned into freeways. That’s just one example in Lisa’s wonderful California of how CORPORATIONS screwed us all for profit. Rail today could be at least 500 times more efficent for freight, and passenger service, across the country, not just for commuting, where the gains are even higher.
But who wants to ride a train for 20 minutes for your commute, when you can spend 4 hours in traffic jams on freeways, and pay a couple hundred a month for parking that car as well, plus maintenance, depreciation, and gas, especially when train fare for the month would be less than half what you pay for parking?? Ah, yes, the “freedom” of being in your own car locked in line with thousands of others going to the same place.
