I don’t get why it’s “blue states.” Plenty of people in all states would love to see the wealthy and the corporations pay their fair share of taxes to keep this nation running efficiently and able to provide for the common good.
Trump cut taxes on the wealthiest among us and thereby increased the national debt by over 7 TRILLION dollars. And he had promised to eliminate the deficit.
US Rep. Chip Roy says he’ll use debt ceiling threat to push through his border security planJan. 25, 2023WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Chip Roy said he will employ brinkmanship over the federal debt ceiling debate — threatening to allow the U.S. to default on its loans — to push through his border security plan that has been criticized by members of his own party for being too extreme.
A dozen European countries had a wealth tax in 1990, but most abandoned them because they were ineffective and expensive to administer. In part, the taxes failed to raise much revenue because wealthy individuals easily moved their assets across borders to avoid taxation. Norway and Switzerland still have it, and I think Belgium and/or Spain. The rates in those countries vary but are generally well under 1%. The rate is relatively low compared to what Bernie and Liz Warren typically propose, which is as high as 5-6%. CA is proposing 1.5% on WORLDWIDE wealth, so they believe they can tax my yacht and villa in the Riviera because I live in Monterey for 6 months a year. I don’t imagine that will hold legal water, so it’s not a solution to preventing people from moving assets out of CA. And why should I be taxed on the original Edward Hopper I purchased, every year, even though I permanently loaned it to the MFA in Boston?
At least some Libs are finally recognizing there is a difference between income and assets. Mostly they just tantrum for higher income taxes on ‘the rich’ without insight that a rich person may have no, or little, income.
And yet the Blue States are the ones supporting the Red States with federal assistance. Then again, nobody ever accused Loony Lisa of being an economics expert.
Richie Rich protectionism here plain and simple. Keep the IRS expansion, start auditing more high earners than middle class, drop the SSI cap for high earners and raise the capital gains tax back to where it is equitable with wage taxation. Then we can talk.
I notice that the donkeys are in a sailing ship and the rich folks are in a motor yacht. It’s almost as if Lisa is trying to say “Stupid poor people, the rich are always going to beat you”.

Don’t worry Lisa, the repubs will save those poor rich people! They’ll cut social welfare programs in order to afford them not paying their taxes.

How is it unreasonable to tax the people with the money? Especially all those people whose money makes more money for them? How is that a bad thing?
