Cuarta y quizá última aparición de la arpista. Me gustaría que Greg y Karen vean la popularidad que obtuvo y espero que vuelva a aparecer más adelante.
At the risk of infuriating people, Bets does have a point. She paid for a specific experience, and while Tiffany argued about it, she did give Bets the impression of having conceded the argument. Both women, in fact, were so wrapped up in their own fantasies that they were insensitive to anyone else, including Gunther, in whose honor all of this was supposed to take place.
Even so, my heart still broke for Tiffany, and I’m glad Ox and TJ were there to console her. Sometimes you need your friends the most when you’re wrong—a fact often lost on people in these increasingly judgmental days.
Looks to me like Tiff should get an “A” on her business concept! Beautifully executed. Let Bets be a brat, it wasn’t her class or her concept. A really big piece that Tiff has to work on, however, is communication with the client—if she plans to actually go into business. She did fine with Tiff as Nails, though, so maybe she just has to listen more carefully and if what she’s selling isn’t what the customer wants, be up front and tell them. And always be sure the customer knows what they will be buying.
I like the way the harpist has stopped playing in panel 1 and resumes in panel 3. Nice touch, G&K.
At this point it looks like the first of my long list of possibilities from yesterday was the best guess (“So will tomorrow’s strip feature Tiffany as she has a romantic dinner with Ox? …”) Now will Ox actually get to enjoy a romantic dinner with Tiffany? Or will they be interrupted by Bets and Gunther returning, or by Gunther returning alone, or by Tom returning, or …? Or will we be left in suspense about just how it went, as the story on Monday shifts to other characters?
I was surprised to see a tear on Tiffany’s face in the second panel, but pleased that Ox saw it and obviously suggested to Tiffany that the two of them enjoy the dinner. There have been a number of suggestions about why Tiffany cried, such as that she had wanted Gunther for herself, or she was out a lot of money. I’d like to believe that Tiffany cried because she really believed in her business concept and was disappointed that she couldn’t convince Bets that ‘romantic dinner’ beat ‘pirates theme’…
I think the thing is that they are enjoying the concept Tiff brought to life—even if Betts didn’t. Remember, Gunther would have enjoyed it if given a chance.
Well, she did screw up and not deliver what the customer asked for. But I’ll live with that in order to get this very sweet moment. Kudos to Ox and TJ!
Poor Tiffany. Bets and Gunther are gone, all her efforts were unappreciated. Fortunately she has friends that love her♡. They are with her, they support her ♡. She can be happy now♡♡♡! I hope next week will be about Bets and Gunther talking in the car.
So much for a romantic evening? . Bets it never was going to be a romantic evening with you turning it into yet another one of yoursocial media cosplay events and poor Gunther just along for the ride. Im for Bets getting the boot.
What’s sad is that Tiffany and Bets are the only characters in the strip with any ambitions. Tiffany wants to be a businessperson like her father and become rich. Bets was to be a major YouTube influence and make a living off that. Luann in contrast barely exists, certainly doesn’t have interest, hobbies or ambitions. Bernice is wound up so tight she can barely function in the real world. How do you create an interesting newspaper comic with such weak subjects. Of course it might help if Greg would once in a while let his characters succeed in what they are doing. Luann’s shelter plans for Tara was a bust, Tiffany’s TT42 was a bust. Bets’ video dinner was a bust, everything Bernice tries is a bust. Off hand we heard that Crystal and Knute were succeeding with their art projects but we never actually see them. We’ve come to the end of an overly predictable arc and all we have to show for it is some burnt cheese with lemon juice.
I have to say that TJ and Ox are showing some class in an awkward situation to make their friend Tiff feel better. I am not sure if it was TJ who suggested that Ox and Tiff have a seat or if Ox saw Tiff’s tear and stepped up but these dudes are making the best out of a bad situation. Ox and Tiff? perhaps. Now TJ needs to make sure the harpist also gets the white glove treatment as well. These 4 may still have a viable business model that can be profitable as long as Tiff finds clientele that have expectations more in line with what Tiff and the crew are comfortable serving up.
Having Tiff go “Pirate” is like asking a fine vocalist that you might find in an opera do a set with the Ramones, Nine Inch Nails, Black Flag, Nirvana or Courtney Love/Hole during one of their more chaotic concerts. Not a good fit. Its like asking a fine chef (like TJ) turn filet mignon into some sloppy joes…. At least the guys took some lemons thrown at Tiff by Bets and made lemonade out of it. Good job gentlemen.
I’m happy with today’s ending. Ox is a sweet guy and finally got a “date” with Tiffany even if it wasn’t planned. Tiffany gets to enjoy the fruits of her labor and maybe even wake up to the fact that Ox is a sweet guy.
Boy this arc has been a real comment producer. I am not at all sympathetic to Tiffany here. She was completely wrong in what she led (left) Bets to believe, she stubbornly held to it and she caused Bet’s anger, so any regret she brought upon herself. I think it very sweet her friends from the Fuse support her, and Ox is such a gentlemen, as is TJ. They are getting no money but for them it was never about that anyway, although the harpist may get stiffed. This being Luannverse and she being a prop it won’t come up. But that does not change what I see as a dangerous character flaw for this poor little rich girl with accommodating friends. People are so focused on the negative with the pushy, possessive Bets they forget Bets has always helped Tiffany, even lying for her to protect from Bernice in the hall party caper, and helping her in school and with business ideas and here Bets is the one embarrassed and angered. Tiffany’s regret that things didn’t go the way she wanted is purely caused by her betrayal here. Not that Bets comes off as an angel here, but between the two Tiffany is the one who might end up being sweetly worse than Ann Eiffel, if anyone gets in her way, who won’t hesitate to use friends to get her way. Hence Les delivering the knockout blow to his mother whom he hates for good reason. I wondered at the time how Greg would draw her to win in the end now I am seeing clearly how. Finally what will happen with Gunther and Bets and will this arc continue until next week? I was sure it would continue up to today. It may or may not but to me this a sad bittersweet ending which reveals some disturbing traits of this emerging young adult.
This is a payoff to the power outage arc from a while back. I wondered what the point of that storyline was.
Tiffany was wrong to prepare a dining experience that she knew her customer did not want. But Bets was wrong for expecting Tiffany to turn a 1%er’s property into a pirate’s cove, as well as for trying to take over Tiffany’s college assignment. Bets is ultimately the real loser here as she has cut herself off from access to someone with money who needed a friend.
This was a school project from the beginning it wasn’t meant to be perfect. Even though they exchanged money, Bets should have had a detailed and written plan of what she wanted. As much as I love Tiffany, she was a bit in the wrong. Yes, Gunther likes simple romance, but the night wasn’t just about Gunther, there should have been somewhat of a compromise between the romantic theme and the pirate theme, it could have been done.
All that begin said, I’m happy Ox and TJ stepped up and made Tiffany feel better after Bets yelled at her. Yelling doesn’t solve everything.
Ya know… I always thought that Tiff and Ox might get it together at some point. Ox might never have been what Tiff expected or desired, but he’s got a heart and integrity, and is absolutely good for her. Yeah, I know… she’d grow bored of him, but there’s always hope.
Come on Gunther have a life you are being treated like a puppy dog. Stand up for your self and tell Bets to go away. You spent hours making the pirate costume. I know it feels good to be around and attractive sexy gal, but get a life.
No one to blame but yourself, Tiff. You meant well and your heart is in the right place but if this is the business you’re trying to pursue, you gotta give the customer what they want. That being said, you got good friends to help pick you up when you’re down.
I’m guessing the words “so much for a romantic evening” were Gunther’s, confirming that he was hoping for just that. And I’m really hoping that there will be some consequences of this (Bets’ behavior) to his relationship with Bets. It is totally unacceptable that she puts these demands on him to attend then abruptly demands that they leave despite all the preparations on EVERYONE’S part except hers. As Argythree said, Gunther is just arm candy. His feelings and concerns don’t matter (to Bets). I’m not saying that i wish for the relationship to end. But there has to be some change going forward.
OK. This is a learning moment. Tiff. You can’t force a customer to purchase something they don’t want. Think of it this way. If you went into a tire store and asked them to install tire A and they said “oh no.. you get tire B” “we know what you really need” would you pay? Could you imagine the grocery store demanding that you stop purchasing sugar? Yea. You don’t want that sugar. We know what’s better for you.
My first reaction was, the old “good riddance”! But the tear in Tiff’s eye and the sympathetic look on Ox’s face was touching. I was hoping Ox and Tiff would end up sharing the romantic meal. They all look happy and that’s a good thing. Nice way to wrap up the week.;-)
Wow. I don’t think I’ve seen so many diverse thoughtful comments in Luann before. Don’t expect this arc to continue Monday. Greg never completely finishes any of the arcs but leaves a lot for us to decide (and argue about) for ourselves. This arc is all about a failure to communicate. Bets is a very smart person and an expert in social media. For instance she sold all of Tiffs cloths a few months back and gets great grades in college. Tiffany has always been goal oriented and really wants to succeed in business. The problem is Tiff and Bets didn’t get it clear between them what was going to happen at the dinner for two. Both thought they had stated their beliefs but they never resolved it and look what happened. In today’s arc we see very sensitive people: Tiff shedding a tear, Ox and Tiff enjoying dinner together. It would be nice if this is the beginning of a relationship.
I have a feeling the Gunther-Bets situation is approaching a crisis point. For one thing, Les has invoked the bro code and called him out on the ring in his nose. Maybe indicating the creators are starting to make the issue explicit and bot leaving it up to the fans. And now this.
On the other hand, Gunther’s zombie-like, lack of reaction during this episode indicates he is still “owned.”
Expected this to conclude with a dinner among friends but didn’t see the Tiff & Ox thing coming. Tho now explains the power outage incident as foreshadowing. The reason I think it could work is he’s probably the only guy in her universe that can love her for her inner beauty as opposed to the superficiality she often projects (which she likely does as a defense mechanism).
So here’s what I have been thinking. Not everyone has the same idea of what romantic dinner means. Yes, I know Bets is bossy, but for her and Gunther, the idea of role play at dinner could be romantic. For Tiff, candle light and soft harp music is her thing. We have been arguing all week about this strip, but I realize there is nor reason for it.
I like this. Tiffany may have had the hots for Gunther and may still carry a candle for him, but she’s never been able to fully carry on an intellectual conversation with him and he’s never really been into her. He’s had tons of chances with her and wasn’t interested. He’s been protective of her, but as he’s told Bets before, he is simply that way with his friends. Part of Tiffany liking him was because he is protective of her.
Ox is a simple, transparent, and honest guy. He too is protective of Tiffany, all who may call him friend, and even anyone who wouldn’t. And he’s sweet on Tiffany. He’s good to her.
Ox and Tiffany are just eating the food that has already been prepared. There is no date and no couple. Ox is a good guy but he and Tiffany are not right for each other at all. Just friends.
And a cute end to the story. I keep forgetting that these arcs tend to just kind of wrap it up all of a sudden without any kind of resolution. Was the tear for Gunther? Was it for the business fail? (definition of success – completion and payment received). Does everyone still get paid? Enquiring minds may never know! Next story will feature Shannon.
Better than nothing. As for whether Gunther and Bets should break up after, it depends. If Bets tries to pull that “choose your friends or me” BS, DUMP. Otherwise, she should agree to go along with something Gunther wants to do even if inconvenient to her schedule. Fair’s fair.
Gunther does need to have a talk with Bets. He gave up studying to make costumes at her request, only to be told to leave like a puppy on a string. All that time wasted. Gunther needs to sit down and realize what he is to Bets.
I hope next week we see Gun stick up for his friend. Bets has truly crossed a line. Thank you, Ox, for your making Tiff feel better. Maybe now she’ll see what a good friend you are.
Wow! How entitled is Bets? And Tiffany used to be the entitled one. And Gunther just let Bets drag him off! He is usually the peacemaker and I’m wondering why he didn’t step in and convince Bets to just enjoy the meal. I’m glad the food and ambiance isn’t going to waste though. Wonder if Tiffany and Ox will become a “thing”?
Tiffany had asked Bets over to help with her assignment. After hearing what it was, Bets had the thought to actually have a romantic dinner for 2 with Gunther, done by Tiffany with a pirate theme she was envisioning at Tiffany’s house. This wasn’t exactly helping her with the assignment, bad on Bets, but when $300 was mentioned, Tiffany was all in, bad on Tiffany. After that they both went off in their own little fantasies of how this would work, and just expected anybody else would jump on board regardless of reality. $300 seems slim for having a cook, waiter, Tiffany, harpist, decor, food. Depending on the outlines of the assignment, it could still be the assignment as a working model..and laying out what worked and what didn’t. That’s why contracts are written, so everyone is agreed to what will happen. I know, it’s a comic, but my two cents anyway!
I like Ox and Tiffany together. He’s a good guy and will treat her well. Tiffany was wrong not to do what Bets wanted but Bets pretty much wrangled gunther into the evening. Don’t recall her ever asking him if this was the kind of evening he wanted.

Could you imagine the grocery store demanding that you stop purchasing sugar? Yea. You don’t want that sugar. We know what’s better for you.

Oh ox. Hes a sweetheart. I know Tiffany was being a jerk but I do feel kinda bad for her

I wonder who is playing the harp. That would have taken a big bite out of the $300

Disappointing that Gunther just let Bets lead him by the nose like that. Hope we see more on Monday where he tells Bets off.

Well, all right! Ox and Tiff deserve a good dinner after all that nonsense. Pound that flaming cheese, guys! OPA!!

I hope we see Gunther next week. I’ve never said those words before! If that doesn’t bring Mordy around, Nothing will.
I hope we learn that Gunther has dumped the selfish, controlling Bets and is back to studying for his classes.

Doesn’t Tiffany need some kind of license, appropriate zoning, her father’s permission, to operate this kind of buisiness?

Better than nothing. As for whether Gunther and Bets should break up after, it depends. If Bets tries to pull that “choose your friends or me” BS, DUMP. Otherwise, she should agree to go along with something Gunther wants to do even if inconvenient to her schedule. Fair’s fair.

Gunther does need to have a talk with Bets. He gave up studying to make costumes at her request, only to be told to leave like a puppy on a string. All that time wasted. Gunther needs to sit down and realize what he is to Bets.
