Yikes! Is Luann trying to get Politically Correct?? While there are some smart, up and coming, young people out there… a lot of the younger generation are basically idiots that are addicted to their phones. They’re concerned about meaningless stuff like “pronouns”.. something we all learned in 4th grade. They don’t even know how to write in cursive.
You have nothing to apologize for, Frank. The country has had it’s issues for a long time.. but it is a GOOD COUNTRY!
Sometimes, certain leaders have to go, to make things better, though….
Is Nancy saying that she’s “younger and smarter” than Frank. If so, why did she marry him?
Oh Man! Are you so wrong! The young can’t navigate out of a wet paper bag!
They don’t even bother explaining Shannon’s presence anymore. She’s just always with the Degroot family, as if she doesn’t even have a father of her own.
Even Puddles is agreeing.
Each and every generation “messes up the World,” to some degree Frank.
It all started when some joker discovered fire eons ago.
But in every generation, there are a handful of “folks” who make things just a little bit better for the rest of Us. But “They” seldom get any credit.
So don’t fret.
And don’t do a lot of unnecessary driving this holiday.
OK then. Now that you’re in charge, bring me a beer.
We’re in trouble
Today generation it’s all about social media and in the 1970’s and 80’s it rock and roll and MTV and movies and TV shows and no cell phones.
Don’t depend on this generation for sure. Most of it anyway.
Like “my darlin’ Clementine, the old days are lost and gone forever”.
ok Puddles, what your solution to the worlds problems? More tummy Rubs
Well, Frank – your life is not over yet. Besides, with this supply chain problem, coffins are at a premium now.
i value your humility Frank! let’s hope for hope!
Technically, America is 245 years old. So we got another 245 years to destroy it.
I can’t work out the point of this strip?
Is Frank supposed to represent the patriarchy?
Is he talking about Boomers?
Is the author saying Nancy, Luann, The Bwat and Puddles would do a better job, would they even want to?
This strip looks like its missed a couple of panels.
Trouble with THAT is — studies have shown that generations are getting dumber, NOT smarter.
Sorry, Shannon. He said younger AND smarter.
Nancy is definitely smart, but Luann and Shannon…
Sometimes I forgot that Nancy is probably 8 or 10 years younger than Frank. You’re right Frank. Your generation has messed up the world, but I’m afraid the generation after yours have little possibility to do something for repair the errors. But is nice to see Nancy, Luann and Shannon be happy and sure they can do something good for the world.
You mean the younger and smarter millennials?
First, the creator of Friends feels guilty for not having minorities in his cast and now, Frank feels guilty for being born in a certain generation. What is this world coming to? Madness! That’s what!
The illustration says with HIStory so messed up, it’s time for “HERstory.”
It’s amusing to watch those who benefitted from others “mistakes” and contributed little criticize those who were/are out there doing things.
If they were so competent, so smart, they’d have already been out there fixing the things they think are messed up (with the exception of Shannon, so far)
My generation. We were anti-war when we were the ones being drafted, but when our kids were the same age it wasn’t us fighting it, we created a state of endless war.
We invented Earth Day when we were young, and then gutted environmental protections because we didn’t want a billionaire to lose his tax cut.
We decided that 30% interest wasn’t usury. And that it was fine to loan-shark 18-year-olds.
We decided that our kids should start their careers with a $50,000 debt that increased at a rate that used to be illegal.
We ran up mountains of unpayable debt for absolutely no return, but figure we’ll be dead when it’s time to pay the piper, so we don’t care.
a generation of vipers
Frank got clobbered on this one.
Dad on acid?
Well, younger, anyway.
Frank, your (our) generation didn’t screw up. The younger ones are the ones need to get educated on what this country is built on. That requires a history lesson, but we will see if it improvs over the next generation.
Younger, maybe. Smarter? Not at all.
Pelosi, Schumer, McConnell, Trump and Biden need to definitely pass the torch.
What, no “Arf” from Puddles in agreement too!
Boomers 1946-1964. The life experiences between early and late boomers is likely greater than that of late Boomers and Generation X. Early boomers experienced the height of the Cold War such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, civil rights protest, Vietnam, long hair on men/cultural changes, post war economic boom, Beatles/rock music, JFK,LBJ,Nixon … Late boom started Jr. High when Jimmy Carter was President and the begining decline of American industry.
I find I have less and less in common with the writers of this script these days.
I will agree that the young generation needs to step up. But not with the dangerous woke nonsense that is being pushed as freedom. The Younger generations have been brainwashed by statists. These statist want to overthrow individual liberty, limited governments,. property rights, free markets and rule of law. They want to replace it with collectivism. authoritarianism, serfdom and centralized economic planning.
I will take the America built by our founders and supported by the Greatest generation. But the radicals that are a large part of the hippie/boomer generation and their offspring millenials and some Gen Z definitely should be given far less power than they have now.
Woohoo! 4th of July weekend! burgers and franks on the grill, and stuffing myself with potato salad. :-)
Time to read Factfulness by Hans Rosling. The world is measurably better in many ways. no perfect, but better
I miss the America that I grew up in
Shannon is an out-of-control brat who probably needs medicating and CERTAINLY needs disciplining, Luann doesn’t know what to do from one day to the next, has no direction or ambition, can barely hold a job and can’t even keep her room clean at the age of 19-20ish (which we’re supposed to find charming) and Nancy is the same age as Frank.
Frank and Nancy are responsible business owners who financially shelter their borderline-useless daughter, provide a rental home for their son, his wife and his friend and give jobs to half the cast. The only younger characters the world could be handed over to would be Brad (who grew up and matured and contributes to society) and Toni, who did the same, neither of whom are present in the strip.
Shouldda guessed Luann was going woke when Tiffany got fat.
time for the younger & smarter to take their turn messing up the world.
seems like they are already on top of it.
Watch what you wish for.
Hey, Frank – you know how to do things right, don’t you? The older generation is needed to show the younger how not to mess things up! (And Team Luann? Lay off the age-ism, if you please.)
I’d be all for it … IF they had any conception of what Ordered Liberty meant. History is rife with anarchic episodes and despots. But to youth today, history means the last version of the iPhone.
Just like cursive, have you ever noticed how Nancys’ hips re-curve so nicely? Of course today the stupid TV is in the way, blocking our view. Some folks call their spouse their “better half”. For Nancy I think her better half is from the waist down. Although sometimes I like her top half better. It’s a tough choice with so much good stuff on display. And that is why it’s important to learn cursive. So you can write a double O word like “cool”, look at it and imagine Nancy doing jumping-jacks.
Every generation ever has done it’s bit to mess up the world, as will the next. Deal with it.
Okay, Frank, which ice floe should they—wait, what?? What kind of attitude is that? You’re alive and can still help people! Weird one.
Maybe the point wasn’t the younger generation is smarter, maybe it is that females are smarter. At least that was my impression.
You’re doomed, Frank.
Unless it’s Nancy doing the taking-over, we’re in deep doo-doo with President Luann and Vice Pres. Shannon.
Every generation leaves a mess and every upcoming generation thinks it can clean it up.
If this is the A Team we are in trouble!!!! lol
Every generation gets blamed for messing up the world. The Boomers (my own generation) blamed the Greatest Generation, and of course, we were going to fix everything and be thanked forever by future generations. When that didn’t happen, we in turn got the blame for the mess we didn’t fix, and the mess that came after. Things had better improve fast, or the generations after us will take the same blame.
If there’s one area where I think my generation did mess up, it was in promoting ‘self’ over ‘others.’ We became self-centered. We espoused philosophies like “If it feels good, do it” “Look out for number one” and celebrated the “Me” generation. And now we complain about selfishness? We clamored for it, and we got it.
I know better than to comment on this one…..
I thought Nancy was the same age as Frank? She must be a lot younger than him to answer like this.
The future will be good in Shannon’s hands. She is creative, motivated and willing to do things. She just needs some guidance. The future would be in bad shape if all young people were like Luann, not motivated nor creative.
Lu needs to venture out in that black tank top. It’s time for her life to get more interesting.
Let me say as a 75 year old proud Baby Boomer that I totally eschew intergenerational criticism directed by old dying off seniors against those who follow them. Then the old generations are saying they failed, but they EVERY GENERATION SAYS WE FAILED. But then the next generation keeps moving on, trained by the complainers, raised by them, and in the case of the three generations on the couch, particularly the last two, do pretty well, though I can see Gn Z talking about "these kids today in 2062 or 72. Good social comment in the hilarity ensues penumbra of this toon. Good on you GnK.
Hey we’re getting censored now!!!! I used a harmless old mocking generational term for senior and got censured saying I had terms against the rules. I’m going to complain; they have the legal right as this is a privately owned forum but I’m not staying quiet about it.
Hmm. Frank is approximately post-hippie, Gen X age. Is that the generation that loused up the world?
♫Every generation. Blames the one before. And all of their frustrations. Come beating on your door.
I don’t think Shannon should be allowed anywhere near any project to “shake up the world”.
And I feel like throwing a pie in the face of cowards of that generation for buying into b.s. of blame. STFU and get to work.
Be careful what you wish for.
My honest first reaction, ignoring the punch line, is that it’s too late for that. Far too much damage has been done to rectify. It’s also a common statement to tell the younger generation that they have to clean up the mess that their elders left for them. I remember a third grade teacher telling my class exactly that. She seemed rather smug about the idea that we would have to fix all the mistakes her generation had left us. She figured she’d be gone so it was for us to worry about. Even then I saw the injustice of that comment.
Frank, do you really believe the younger generation is any smarter?
things we don’t do anymore, that may be signs we didn’t mess things up as bad as is popular to say.
- we don’t teach kids to “duck and cover” because of the expected nuclear war
- we don’t have millions of children crippled by polio
Younger and Smarter are antonyms of each other.
The woke generation is doing enough damage. They think men can have babies.
And what is your generation?
Spoken like a true demacrap…
Said no “geezer” EVER!
Nancy Degroot’s “Ok” ?
We boomers learned humility living in the shadow of the “Greatest Generation”. Not that I begrudge their accomplishments.
The following gens, positivity, encouragement and participation awards.
We have it better than any other time period.
No matter what demograph you belong to you if you live in an English speaking country your life has never been as good as it is right now
Of course I’d rather live in the time period of the 1980s to 2000s, just before social media and smart phones really took off
Different skills are needed by different generations.
Per this cartoon, everyone wants power but they seldom see the weight of the responsibility. Dad’s adjusted to the weight and can’t imagine the women/girls could handle it. And Mom, you’re a member of the older generation.
I agree, my generation could have fixed so much, but we sold out in the 80s
Not your “generation” just the white men. Time to step aside and put the woman in charge.
Every generation comes into this world thinking that they have all the answers.
They just don’t say that they’re the RIGHT answers…!
Sorry, Frank. “The younger and smarter” aren’t….
Really, this nonsense? Shut up, Greg!!!
I can’t watch old Lucy shows. I can’t get past Ricky giving her a spanking. I guess I’ve become too politically correct.
Yes, now they get their turn to mess up the world!
And when you and yours screw it up, you fix it by yourself
“General Puddles here to relieve you, sir.”
So this comment has nothing to do with the strip, but I see numerous comments making statements about teachers, how much say they have in curriculum and what they do and don’t teach. As a teacher, I frequently implore my students to back up their claims with evidence from reliable sources. Perhaps the grownups could give it a go, because I’m constantly amazed at how eagerly people are to speak on what teachers do without ever actually checking the facts or visiting a classroom. The descriptions I see here versus what actually goes on in my classroom have no resemblance to each other whatsoever. Knowledge is a good thing. Embrace it.
Led Puddles run the country. At least he’ll"do no harm"
