When this arc is over, we will all be screaming, YIPPEE!!! lol
So who would win in a fight… Vale or Ox ??
This is very odd … ✨
Vale fail. Bail.
It’s a start, and you gotta start somewhere.
I guess we’re still in the wind up… waiting for the pitch. (Wonder what’s going on over at Chickweed?)
Still stuck with herman munsters dumb nephew I guess.
Well Vale, if you are writing a Van Gogh diary, you can always play it by ear!
So much for leading the horse to water.
Luann. This is a complicated assignment. You ought to go to the teacher and tell him he can’t expect his students to know how the painters feel or think. Only a painter can write such a diary about painters. If I were Van Gogh, I’d write in my diary about the illicit drugs I took last night that led me to paint Starry Night.
A three week arc.
It’s a little more complicated then that Vale.
I do believe he’s got it!
Text for Vale from Dr. Frankenstein: “Pick up Igor and return to the lab, we’ve got some new parts from Bodies R Us.”
Right now I’m feeling I will probably cut off my ear before this arc is over.
That’s easy, Vale-O:
(Alarm Clock Ringing)
“Got out of bed.”
“Took a knife, unto my head.” – “A day in the Life.” Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
On second thought, perhaps you should listen to Don McLean’s “Vincent” for inspiration.
“Woke up. Nicked my ear while shaving. Hope it’s not too serious.”
Give up Luann, he’s hopeless.
I have a sneaking hunch this sneering fool is going to go beyond a sneering fool. Maybe even into Jackazzdum…
I do notice in the second panel that he and Luann do share a habit/behavior. When Luann has been depicted as working and concentrating on something, her tongue goes out just like his. I have seen a number of people over the years that do that, and I do wonder why.
Interesting. Despite his problems in showing emotions, Vale’s choice was one of the most emotional painters ever. If Luann can get him to read “Letters to Theo”, he could discover a whole new world full of emotions, passions, desires, hopes and despair related to making art with the total belief that it’s the most important thing in life.
Luann misses the point,
essays like this are not so much about creativity.
They want you to research the artist´s life and then make plausible statements about why is she painting in a certain technique etc. They usually don´t want two pages about Toulouse-Lautrec´s favorite Absinthe den or van Gogh endorsing safety razors.
All the things you suggest make incredibly good sense. It should be done. Are you really Greg Evans with plans for the future?
Probably Vale, because Ox is just a big, loveable teddy bear who wouldn’t wish any harm on anybody. But right now, we don’t know anything about Vale. For all we know, he is just being stand-offish because he is nervous around Luanne because he is attracted to her, and he is shy. And maybe, he just doesn’t have much imagination.
Actually, for that particular artist, that very well might be how he would right his diary.
“Artist” is a very broad term. It can refer to anybody in the arts, including singers and actors. It doesn’t have to be somebody in the visual arts.
Also, does Luann REALLY want to urge Vale to dig into Van Gogh’s mind? Because it wasn’t a good place. Does Vale even know that Van Gogh killed himself?
Put it in sports terms. Today, I am facing a blank canvass. Formidable opponent. Need to move the brush one stroke at a time across the plane to get to my desired image.
There is a shortage of engineers, scientists, and people who work in the technical professions. Notice the writers of this comic don’t acknowledge this fact.
This is the closest arc to reality I have seen in this strip. To write, one must write. Freshman composition courses at good universities are a major shock to many.
It reminds me of Cheech and Chong‘s “Sister Mary Elephant”….. “The first day of my summer vacation, I woke up. Then, I went downtown, to look for a job. Then I hung out in front of the drug store. The second day of my summer vacation, I woke up. Then, I went downtown, to look for a job. Then I hung out in front of the drug store. The third day of my summer vacation…”
It’s difficult to feminize a club dragging, hunter/gathering Neanderthal.
Vale just doesn’t give a rats hat about this diary gig.
I really don’t like this guy.
Luann, jocks don’t like sharing their feelings unless its about the winning score of a game or scoring with a hot woman.
Not very excited there Vale. But then maybe Van Gogh wasn’t either.
Sometimes you need to understand that nobody is good at everything and just take the F.
I think, because the characters are aging, they are not naturally as funny. Some people continue to have a great sense of comedic timing throughout their life but most of us are just the audience. This arc is good, it is showing how great Luann is as a teacher. She is really helping Vale with his assignment without showing any of what she is thinking, which for her is a real sign of maturity. Yea Luann!
Is that other comic site dead for everyone? Or did they throw me out?
“We’d., Aug 10 . Woke up, read Luann. Zzzzzzzzz…”
Yippee is a good start; sure, he put that in as a joke, but it’s still a start. Build from there, Luann.
I still don’t see how this assignment is useful for Art History. Maybe for creative writing.
Can hardly wait till that ape is gone for good!!
I’d like to see an arc about Tiff’s relationship with her father (or lack, thereof).
You know Vale said it was “emotional” for him to do this assignment. Why? Personal fear he can’t do it? Real lover of Van Gogh (have to be something wrong with someone who doesn’t at least like Van Gogh art, what makes him one of the top 5 artists, in the West, anyway)? Luann’s task, no matter how hilarious, is to find what he is emotional about. I will hazard a guess that him being what too many here mock as a dumb palooka might not be. Too many assume that is what GnK mean here, but I smell a major misdirection play coming.
Making fun of Van Gogh’s mental illness is a sad refection on what people laugh it here.
It was the first suggested he had bipolar disorder in 1947, and this has been supported by the psychiatrists Hemphill and Blumer. Biochemist Wilfred Arnold has countered that the symptoms are more consistent with acute intermittent porphyria, noting that the popular link between bipolar disorder and creativity might be spurious. Temporal lobe epilepsy with bouts of depression has also been suggested. Whatever the diagnosis, his condition was likely worsened by malnutrition, overwork, insomnia and alcohol.
BTW, eyewitnesses say he only actually severed his earlobe. He died of a self inflicted gunshot to the chest that became infected, not from the bullet itself.
What a stupid class assignment.
why does he remind me of Trump!
At least he picked a great artist. Love me some Vincent!
It’s hard to give writing advice or any advice to someone who is not on the same page.
this guy’s dialog is like watching paint dry.
I am with Vale, this is a lame assignment.
Yep, every time, for whatever reason, I’ve been told to try journaling this is how every day goes.
Ian Anderson would say, ‘Thick as a brick!’
Public school graduate, no doubt. I bet he knows his pronouns!
An accurate depiction of a brain-dead sports “hero”.
Vale is off to a rocky start already. (How did he decide upon an art class anyway?)
“O, my anguished heart..shall I argue more with Paul (Gaugin) about style or expressionism only drive him away and me further nuts-o??”
“nobody liked my paintings again today, feeling really down”
From what I know about Van Gogh, he only sold one painting in his own lifetime and committed suicide
I think we found Luann’s intellectual equal.
I foresee Vale all of a sudden spouting a bunch of flowery feelings as he unleashes a hidden depth he keeps under wraps to maintain his jock image. The message will be "don’t judge a book by its cover "
Van Gogh’s diary, page 37:
“Note to self: Women are NOT impressed with gifts of sliced-off ears, no matter how nice the box is wrapped”
Why do you think he cut off his ear? Can you think about what mental issues he was having?
Feeling wacky again.Would go jump off cliff but none outside.
“Dear Diary, today I cut off my own ear. Think I’ll send it to this girl I know. -Love Vinny Van Gogh.”
“Dear Diary-still in friend zone. Sucks to be me-Love Vinny Van Gogh.”
Vale looks so much BIGGER that Luann it throws things off. She’s supposed to be counseling students younger than herself.
Well,at least this one isn’t trying to “hit on her”.
Van Gogh,Picasso,Gaugain(who abandoned his wife and kids to live in Tahiti)—-some great artists weren’t exactly model citizens
Vale is younger than Luann; he’s just physically big. He’s in high school probably having to do summer work. And Luann is doing a great job; it would be easy for her to make suggestions (or do the whole assignment herself); but as a good teacher she’s making Vale do do all the work and thinking, forcing him to come up with everything.
Vale seems to have painted himself into a corner.
Wait until he gets to Thursday when he cuts off his ear.
Well, let’s look at the positive aspects. At least he can read and write, and seems willing to learn and work on his assignment.
I woke up. Then I went downtown. To look for a job. Then I hung out in front of the drugstore.
Tutors have it hard.
Demonstrates the futility of trying to force interest in stuff someone isn’t interested in. I also, disliked my college “art appreciation” class.
Has Luann done anything in college that isn’t related to art?
Be thee still, my bleating heart!
I can’t say I know what Greg thinks, or how he goes about creating characters, but this Vale doesn’t seem to be Greg’s drawing style at all. It seems like, in trying to relate to a younger generation, he’s created characters like Axel and now this Vale who are just kind of obnoxious and ugly. Ignorant wise guy punk with puckered lips and acne face, sneering muscle bound idiot hulk who can barely write his name, they just aren’t interesting at all, anyway, not to me. Maybe he’s just bored with drawing the same characters all the time.
This is sooooooo baaaaaadddd it’s so sad to not look forward to seeing the next days release….
Hes got a letter sweater, probably a football scholarship which would explain his need for tutoring. I think it’s great what Luanne is doing and interesting
Vale is much more to the point, and on point, than is Luann. Don’t try to change his “diary,” Luann. Encourage it as it is….
van Gogh probably won’t be saying yippee by the end of the week.
Failure but honest failure.
“Monday, got up, drew pictures, cut off my ear”
