Maybe Dez is handing Stef a fiver, not understandind that Stef need $600. But it is possible that Dez more money than people realize because she does seem to travel a lot, and spent the summer break in Haiti building a hospital. It never seems like she is hard up for money.
Okay quite a few things here to unpack (Cracks knuckles)
One: Kiff they are not friends and never were. You are right she’s doing the right thing.
Two: Steff as someone who has carried dishes for a living, stop. What you do IS work, but Tiff does work for her money
Three: Dez quit enabling her. Honestly the most annoying thing about Stef at this point.. is that Dez and Bets tend to act like she’s an entirely resonable likeable person and not someone who accused both of them of theft, is self abosrbed and just hit up someone she ACCUSED OF THEFT for 600 dollary doos.
Where did that pop up from Dez? I didn’t know you could actually grow money trees in the community garden. The only money trees I could ever grow end up with worthless but pretty silver seedpods.
DEZ, WHAT ARE YOU DOING???! Now Stef will always ask her for money! I had thought she would be the one to give them to her But only after Stef started begging her, not just out of pity for after hearing her talk! Dez, poor generous, wonderful girl…, her kindness will lead unscrupulous people like Stef to take advantage of her.
Dez to the rescue. Well, they’re roomies so why not? She probably got it from her save the forest fund. + Steff probably lets Dez do pretty much anything.
maybe this will get Stef out of the dorm for awhile, (practice time plus the event itself, hopefully out of town). If Stef pays the money back, it’s a win-win….good thinking Dez!!
Stef, this is a loan and you will pay me back with interest. Interest is 8% compounding daily. (in 5 pt font) Failure to repay in four weeks forfeits all your dorm possessions, including your room.
Stef could always get a job as a pole dancer or as a worker in the sex industry. Or, maybe not, because those occupations require dedication and discipline, of which she has neither.
Very kind of Dez. Why don’t college cheerleaders get paid for their work? It’s highly skilled work with brutal hours, attracts people to the games (makes money for the team) and you have to put up with lechers all day long and rude commentators. Similar to waitressing but a lot harder physically. Surely this hard work should be compensated..
This is a perfect end to this story. Dez regards money as a simple tool and not a symbol of anyone’s character. She won’t get the money back and she doesn’t care.
some takeaways for me: 1. the image in the 1st panel of Tiff and Steffie glaring at each other with their helmet-like hair, the clash due (in part) to Steffie as a reflection of Tiff’s former self. 2. Dez as the eternal peacemaker, so much so that she is actually putting up $ to accomplish that goal. 3. The problem is that Steff will now feel justified in requesting $600 which is a lot of cash for a college student to just have lying around (or maybe in a locked box, not a bank… is this how Dez operates financially?)
Dez is handing Stef the money without stating any conditions at all. Really bad move on her part. Dez should state some rules before she offers the brat any money. This will only make Stef treat Dez worse, not better. Dez probably thinks this will make Stef become a better person, but Dez is delusional if she really thinks that. Stef is a user and always will be.
“Neither a borrower or a lender be”. Such truth. Money can certainly wreck all types of relationships. Once, I loaned my cousin $4,000 to help her and her husband out of a big jam. A couple of years later, she was divorced but did pay back $1,000 of it…. then dropped off the radar. After a couple of years, she came back around and asked to borrow $500. I had to remind her that she still owed me $3,000…. She got all huffy and said I was a “greedy, selfish pick”. That put an end to it. That was about 15 years ago. Since then, she’s conveniently forgotten that she still owes me money… we’re not on the best of terms now. I learned my lesson. Never again.
My understanding is “work” is the stuff they pay you for. “Life” is the stuff you spend the money on. “Debt” is the excuse for never getting ahead. (Or is it just me?) April Fool’s!
There’s an old saying that you should never “lend” money to a friend unless you can afford to never see it again. (And don’t give me any grief about split infinitives; in that sentence “see” is the infinitive; the “to” is a preposition that, in effect, puts the verbal noun in the equivalent of an oblique case. Most of the time in English, infinitives don’t have a “to”, as in may see, will see, could be, might have, etc., as well as complements to “help” as in “Could you help me wash the dishes?”)
What happens if Steffo doesn’t pay back Earth Mother Supreme? Even an Earth Mother wouldn’t put up with losing $600. Dez can afford to travel to far off lands for her saintly works, but still. Evans knows $600 is a lot of money…right?
Sure, Steff is maybe the most annoying* character ever in Luanniverse, but Dez is showing charity to the unlovable – something I’ve heard about in a very different venue, from people very different from Dez.
Does Steff “deserve” the money? No. Does Dez care? No.
Will Steff use it to pursue her version of her dream? Looks like it. Will she win anything? Doubtful. Will Dez care? No.
This could turn into a big story line in a very direction from the recent petty squabbles. Steff could become what Tiff stopped being when she went to college. If only GnK were up to it.
*There’s evil, there’s conniving, and then there’s annoying. They’re not exactly the same thing.
I hope G & K have a good reason for making Dez an enabler to the terror that is Steff. Dez must know that she’ll never see that money again. By the way, $600 is not chump change for most college kids, yet, she had it – cash on hand.
As another commenter pointed out, Dez gives Stef the $ right after Kip’s remark that money ruins friendships. Many possibilities here, from Stef paying Dez back and surprising everyone, to Stef viewing Dez as a sucker/easy touch (and not surprising anyone.)
