Here we go with false equivalency again. Like Reagan said, you can’t say anything bad about me unless you say something bad about them. Davies is saying, I can’t say anything bad about the republicans unless I say something bad about the democrats. I am glad I didn’t watch the state of the union address, the republicans have lost the last vestige of decency.
I see this toon as a statement about the nature of our nation most, if not all, of the time. Going back to the very beginning of our government, we had the Federalists including Washington and Adams, who believed in a strong central government. And, we had the anti-federalists who believed the opposite. Even today, we have the left, Dems, who see a role for government to make our lives better, and the right, Repubs, who want less government intrusion in their right to accumulate great wealth. We are a divided nation. That’s a fact.
If this were drawn to reflect the true state of affairs, Uncle Sam would already holding hands with the left because the left would be reaching out to him, and trying to reach the right, but the right keeps moving farther away, slapping Uncle Sam’s hand and taunting Uncle Sam every time he tries to each them.
Except that we don’t have a left in American politics. We have various degrees of right ranging from foam at the mouth crazy to Chamber of Commerce. There’s been no left at least since Reagan.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved – I do not expect the house to fall – but I do expect it will cease to be divided. (AL)
If it were accurate, the Left would be holding on, while the Right would be slapping the offered hand away. Or up-turned in anticipation of a pay-off. Or a clenched fist.
The subtext here is that Sam has ALREADY moved pretty far to the right, and in response the “right” wingers keep moving further to the extreme. And complaining that nobody’s reaching out to them.
that piece of trailer trash who shouted “liar” during the sotu speech, as if she were at a ballgame in nyc, will be the perfect poster girl for moderate politicians who want to return a bit of decorum and simple manners to the process…
The scene at the SOTU reminded me of the UK tradition, the Question. Where the PM stands up in front of the House of Commons and answers shouted questions. Whatever you might think of that tradition, it makes the PM respond directly, not thru talking heads or dueling interviews, but directly. This SOTU made me think of that. It also showed that Speaker KM has no control over the GQP looney tunes. The whole world was watching as the TV hogs of the GQP started acting like spoiled children. Frankly, their actions were very embarrassing

The Left should be fully in the drawing with Uncle Sam to the right and the Right farther to the right and pulling his hand away.

Note how much closer the Left is to Uncle Sam than is the Right.
