Reminds me of “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow”. Ichabod was immensely proud to be a village schoolmaster at the start of the story. Later, when he believed he would be marrying Katrina Van Tassel for her money and property and status, he looked forward to feeling superior to whoever replaced him as village schoolmaster. He was building himself up to a big fall, of course.

Next week Mildred can work on object permanence at this rate.

Indeed. Younger Mildred was a blundering moron, while older Mildred is an unparalleled genius. Younger Mildred had rocks for brains, while older Mildred has fancy pudding brains. Younger Mildred sucks, while older Mildred sucks less.

And so on.

Sluggo should open a business. The sign could say “Psychiatric Help 5 cents”!

I like how Mildred is able to see at her state without false hopes. But the positive thing is that now Sluggo could be her classmate.
