In the morning, driving to teach in Benton Harbor on I 94, Iād pass by a field of sheep just as they were being let out to graze for the dayā¦There was always one trotting ahead in the leadā¦
If the radio talk shows had that big a following, they could compete with conservative talk radio! Not well, perhaps, but they could at least get some sponsors.
haha The pot calling the kettle black! I love it when comic artists disparage the general populace. I think this strip says more about Wiley than anything else!
The truth is people of both sides see the opposition as stupid, why else would they disagree with MY well thought out position. If you accept the other sides opinion a being possibly valid your half way to having a rational discussion, that is against the laws of nature.
The song is āBringing in the SHEAVESā, as in harvesting grain. Please feel free to resume commenting on the ignorance and stupidity of others, now.
It would appear thereās a reading and comprehension problem going on here. The cartoon clearly says āradio talk show hostā. That, dear readers, includes ALL of talk radio (as well as all cable ānewsā programs, but that would have made the cartoon more complicated). Most of you seem to think itās directed at conservative talk radio, as there are more of those, but it is not. This is about preaching to the choir, which is what all talk radio has devolved to. There was once a time when talk radio stations had a variety of hosts of all political stripes. It was far more interesting as youād get actual dialogue from people and hosts. We donāt get that anymore. It is now completely agenda driven, by both ends of the political spectrum. And thatās why I stopped listening to talk radio and stopped watching cable news programs years ago, even to those who I agreed with politically. I prefer to do my own thinking, thank you, not follow mindlessly behind some talking head whoās only interested in ratings.
One last thingā¦for those of you who for some reason were upset by this cartoon and responded with a personal attack, all you are doing is validating the point of the satire and actually agreeing with it. You see the truth in it, but rather than face up to it, you launch into name-calling hoping to divert attention away from the point. If you disagree with the point, state your disagreement with it, and try to do so in a civil manner. Thatās how it used to be in a bygone era of radio.
Why do people assume that this about conservative talk radio? Talk radio is about entertainment these days and pandering to their target audience . . . kind of like many news stations. Donāt like what you hear? Change the channel until someoneās telling you exactly what you already believe . . . itās all about money honey.
Thank you for elucidating what should have been ā but apparently wasnāt ā obvious to all your readers.Like yourself, I stopped listening or watching shows that simply reinforced my own political and social beliefs. They were preaching to the choir, as you said. The much maligned NPR does have some shows with a good balance of ideas and good interaction from the listening audience.Because there are more of them and they are more bombastic than their progressive counterparts, ( with exceptions ) conservative pundits do make great satirical targets.Unfortunately, on both sides of the divide, we are losing our sense of humor and our ability to laugh at ourselves.
A radio talk show host has but one jobā¦ grab as big an audience as possible, by any means possible and generate Money for him/herself, the station owner and the All Mighty sponsors. There is no other reason for their existenceā¦ if it was for the good of the publicā¦ no one would noticeā¦ but HATE somethingā¦ now, thatās radio !!
I fully agree with Wiley, whether Rush or Reverend Al, polarization is our problem today, without recognizing the reality is closer to the equator.
That said, I donāt listen to radio that much, because itās not closed captioned, and even with hearing aids, trying to understand all thatās said by āmumblersā is very hard, and trying. BUT: itās also interesting that itās always the extremist āconservativesā who label all āliberalsā as āsheepleā, who are the first to jump on such a ātoon like wooly lemmings taking offense.
Wiley must still be bummed because his beloved Airhead America crashed and burned years ago, while El Rushbo, The Han-Man, and The Great One are still going strong (and keep getting stonger).
Having worked in local radio, I know that you donāt have to be intelligent to natter on for two hours about nothing in particular. And now here is the travel news with Gary Gridlock.
Humanity, by and large, is just a flock of sheep; either being led around by the nose, or milling around stupidly waiting for the wolves to pick them off. (I just thought that up!)
My old high school history teacher (back in the ā60ās) is now a shock jock on Sydney talk-back radio. After being compelled to attend several 40minute period each week for 2 years with him, I cannot understand why so many people voluntarily tune in now.
So, Miller, are you a member of the audience? Just, think about it before you answerā¦ (Ok, for those of you in Rio Linda ā if heās not a member of the audience, how does he know the content? From what others tell him? Thatās generally the case for critics of FNC.)

How smart is a cartoonist who insults a portion of his readership? (Apologies to anyone who said this first. 48 comments is too much to read.)
