Why talk politics at all? Nobody today can be convinced of an opposing opinion from the one they have in this climate.

Will we now witness how consistently they violate it, or will the barkeep cut them off after the first warning?

Well, today is Memorial Day, when we pay our respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to our country. Most of us think of them as heroes, but a former commander in chief calls them “losers” and “suckers”. Not just the ones who were killed, anyone who served at all! So if you’re a veteran, that’s what he thinks of YOU. And if you know some vets, that’s what he thinks of THEM. So do remember that on Nov. 5, when you’ll have a very meaningful opportunity to indicate what you think of HIM!

Today, in the US, is a good day to remember what politics is supposed to be about — finding ways for groups of people [e.g., countries] to solve their problems — foreign and domestic — without waging war and finding ways to improve the lives of their people so that individuals and the group can prosper.

Our Founding Fathers did their best by creating The Constitution, the supreme law of our country. It defines the structure and constrains the powers of the federal government — three branches to ensure that we will be governed by LAWS, not a dictator or king. It describes the rights and responsibilities of state governments to their residents and to the nation [federal government]. It identifies and protects the ‘inalienable human rights’ and individual liberties of all. It has been amended 27 times to clarify those rights.

It establishes the USA as a country governed by LAWS, not force. And what do citizens of this great country have to do in return? Not a heck of a lot. We PAY TAXES to fund the government and government programs that are designed to ensure laws are upheld, people are protected, our lives are improved and our states and nation can thrive. We VOTE to elect people to the political parts of the federal, state, city governments. And, some of us — it is usually voluntary — serve as protectors in the armed services, police, fire depart, etc. Those who serve — as well as those elected and those hired carry out the responsibilities of government — we all take an oath which begins:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”

We swear to uphold the Constitution, not the President, because we are a nation of LAWS. We need leaders who abide by the laws and work to improve them. We don’t need leaders who think they are above the law or believe they can ignore those they don’t like. It’s slower than brute force, but it is democracy.

Prayers for the fallen, the wounded, the damaged, and their families, loved ones, and caregivers. Without your courage, life in the last 100 years would have been very different. Thank you.
