Old grandpas might think of footwear or something else when hearing the word “thong”. But if someone means “flip-flop” they oughta just come out and say it.
Over 40 years ago as a very young assistant manager at a restaurant a guest comes up to the counter where several other customers were standing and and fairly loudly asked “You got a #£{k?” I say “excuse me?” So he repeats himself. Other patrons are looking a little shocked. Then I understood his request and I answered loud enough so that the others would know that “yes I can get him a FORK”

I trust it wasn’t Sisqo’s “Thong Song.”
