Crocodile: Attention, everyone! I want you to meet Mr. Clyde Doofus, our new client. Clyde has a big bag of money he wants to (ahem) invest with us. Ol' Clyde don't get out much.
it’s a business, it’s all about profit. nothing to do with conscience, politeness, consideration, etc. what is you peoples’ problem “getting” it? i’m not here for niceness, i’m here to Make Money. duh. do it, or i’ll find someone who will.
I can’t find it at the moment but Thomas Jefferson once said something about how a merchant never cares much about the country he’s in compared to using it to line his pockets. This ring a bell for anybody? I’d think that any merchant, or banker, or hedge fund manager SHOULD be patriotic enough to care what he does to his country. (By the way, Oliphant draws some excellent crocodiles!)
Found it! “Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains”—Thomas Jefferson, letter, March 17th 1814
And in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and all those green crocodiles:
To avoid a whole host of St. Patrick’s Day illsMake sure that your beer is as green as your gillsMake sure that your clovers have 4 leaves (no fewer)Make sure that you barf not in street but in sewerAnd if you are lucky and catch all the breaksYou’ll see no pink elephants nor purple snakes
One more time: if your values are just ‘making money’, then one day you find someone for whom THAT is their most tightly held position…and they will TAKE YOURS.And in that pyramid of values, only the nastiest rise to the TOP…;you now have a government of ‘conservatives’ who believe that everything IS for sale…they didn’t care that tarp came from the Treasury…it’s money, right? of course they gave out bonuses. They WORKED to put the scam in place…again, the STORY is nothing. They located the money, it was in the Treasury, they operated a plan that got it for them…So stupid people…deluded lower-level ‘conservatives’ being dangled and used by higher-level New Confederates…think that a ‘buy and sell mentality’ is sufficient for GOVERNMENT…which had better be more about fairness and justice than about buying and selling…or…there will be a lot of American blood spilled over the next generation…

After the events of the banking crash and the TARP bailout and bonuses, the only surprise is that someone admitted it.

As I noted yesterday, the satirical Borowitz Report said that Joseph Kony would be taking over operations at Goldmans.

How doth the crafty brok’rage firmImprove its bottom line?As robins seek the hapless worm,As lions hunt to dine!
How toothily its reps do grin,Their clients to betray,The contract ’tween them much akinTo predator and prey!

If a foreign nation had done to to us the same level of damage that Wall Street has done, we would have bombed that country into the Stone Age.

Dilbert addressed this practice back in 1992. Plus ça change, plus ça reste la même chose…

Two excellent quotes, Grainbelt, but not the one I was thinking of. I’ll try to see if I can hunt it up this afternoon.

The point of deregulation was to make buckets and buckets of money any which way you can.
