But seriously, folks...first, let me tell you how it's all Obama's fault! US Ambassador killed in Libya 3 of staff also die Behold, the clown who would be President!
I’m actually enjoying Mitt speaking up, making a complete fool of himself, and showing his true colors to those with eyes to see. Sad that people had to die for the message “Not Ready To Lead” to come thru regarding Mitt Romney, but no one forced Romney to act like an idiot.
I’d rather somebody speak up instead of being a Great American Apologist. You know the people who think 9/11 was our fault and our Ambassador being killed is also our fault because we allow freedom of expression through movies? This kind of weak position is why Iran is where it is today. This whole Arab Spring bs which was praised by the media and our leader is really just the beginning of a whole new Muslim extremist wave.
And, in a minute, Obama will say it was Bush’s fault. After all, when he went into that mosque on his Pacific trip, he told the Muslims that he was not an infidel.
Well, we certainly don’t have to guess Oliphant’s point of view about this..What I admire in him is that he isn’t slavishly consistent to one political side. Oh, there’s a liberal vein in there that he follows under the landscape, and he forges liberal alloys from it. But he is willing to criticize one side or the other for separate foibles as they occur. He mocks both saints and sinners, knowing those are only relative terms..He’s given the razz (even the finger) to both Democrats and Republicans. He’s no friend of the mindless mob (his works during the turbulent ‘60s show that). He doesn’t glorify the unions or sloppy workmanship. He portrays the U.S. as right or wrong or merely stupid as he sees fit. He doesn’t give our legitimate enemies any pity. He isn’t always right in the long run (taking a long look backward I now question his Pulitzer Award cartoon point of view). .In other words, his work is complicated and liable to error just as our society is. If he changes his mind, it’s as society does. It’s not opportunistic flip-flopping. He is stuck in this era just as we are, but has an intellectual prescience about political movements because he does thinking about them for his job. It’s amazing that he has worked so long and the quality of the work remains so high..My views on this stem from long appreciation of political commentators and artists. Most of them are dead or in the last stages of their careers. They range from Mencken to the present. I am appalled at the current commentators that infest the Internet. There’s so many that we can’t read them all and develop honest, valid opinions. Instead we sort through and tend to munch on the political candy we like best. It’s a kind of Intellectual Inbreeding. I especially despise those commentators who fawn on certain political individuals or parties as a livelihood. They are not journalists – they are sniveling PR prostitues..I make it a point to read newspaper columnists that express views that oppose my usual ones. I go through their points and see if I can counter theirs with my own at present. It forces me to think. Sometimes I change my opinions, or at least modify them. I admire real thinkers, of whatever political persuasion – but their written output has to be based on solid facts, valid trends, trustworthy sources..Mike Royko had this idea of a journalist: A real journalist sees a huge pothole, and doesn’t wring his hands over it, then write about the inconvenience and injustice of potholes. Somebody was to blame for that pothole. He spits in it and demands from the city why something isn’t done about, and then keeps badgering them until it’s repaired. He keeps the people in political power in a constant sweat..I occurs to me that Oliphant, as much as any teacher, has helped form my intellectual point of view. I am so sorry that many of my media mentors have gone before I could thank them. Before it’s too late —.“Thanks, Pat.”
@emptc12One of your best essays ever! I especially liked what you said about deliberately exposing yourself to columnists whose views you know ahead of time are likely to conflict with your own. I do that all the time myself, and I wish more people would. And sometimes I find myself agreeing with columnists I usually disagree with, and disagreeing with ones I usually agree with. (For example: Charles Krauthammer, who I usually disagree with though I always read him, had a column the other day about how deterrence simply won’t work against Iran the way it did against the Soviet Union. I completely agree with him.) And of course Mike Royko is SADLY missed in these treacherous modern times……….
Obama: take out a number 2 official (assumed) with a drone piloted by a kid who was good at first-person-shooter games, even if it hits a wedding party or mosque or kindergarten..Romney: start an undeclared war with whatever country the Likud tells you..Or cast a protest vote for Greens. Just don’t stay home because that literally doesn’t count.
Right wing trolls are diverting the conversation. There’s one REAL topic here and it’s that Romney completely jumped the gun before he realized what was going on. The embassy did the right thing, trying to defuse the situation that arose from another right wing moron’s film insulting the man considered the most important spiritual leader of Islam. Notice that there aren’t any wing nuts complaining about that stupid movie?! That’s because they are in agreement with it. Four Americans are dead, completely needlessly, because of this movie, not because of anything that came from this administration. (I must note that the Muslims completely overreacted, but that isn’t under our control). Now Romney is trying to figure out a way to etch-a-sketch his way out of those completely uncalled for statements he made, but it isn’t going to work. He’s been shown to be a reactionary clown and voters will remember it! Don’t feed the trolls!!!!!We should be grieving for the families of the needlessly dead Americans.
That’s rubbish. I watch Fox News and that is simply not true. BTW, they employ all races creeds, colors and points of view, so maybe the real faux news is MSNBC, MediaMatters or whatever you get your info from.
emptc12: Agree with your statements completely, it is SO important to read or listen to even those we disagree with, it’s called “getting all the information you can, BEFORE a decision is reached”. There ARE those who seem to waste our time, but even their virulence is important to hear, and judge their impact on our society.
Yes, THANK YOU, PAT, for picking apart hypocrisy from any source, and bringing both humor and assessment to America!!
Hey! Where were the Marines that were supposed to guard those guys? And where were the bullets for their guns? All we need now are a few hostages and we’re back to Mr. Carter. Didn’t you KNOW this was gonna happen after that Cairo speech?
So, did you cons notice that yesterday (when both campaigns agreed to suspend political activities), that Romney violated that (with another poorly-received speech) to the National Guard..Look up what o did and think about your statement.
The embassy made the statement before the attacks: diplomats being diplomatic, it’s their job. Romney picked and chose the sentences that served his purpose. He misattributed them, he further inflamed a serious situation, he doubled down on his claims even after he got more information and knew he’d been incorrect the night before, he blamed the White House when the White House, once it knew of the embassy’s statement, went through it line by line saying where they felt it was not worded well: our claim on the right to free speech needed to be foremost.
Romney doesn’t care or just doesn’t see who he hurts by what he says. He does not have the judgment nor the necessary political skills to deal with the world, much less the voters. He has no place getting anywhere near the Oval Office.
Humph.Oliphant could leave this cartoon up for the rest of the campaign season and it would no doubt be topical and timely. Let us not forget that ridiculous Robme was and is merely the least sorry of the remarkably sorry Rethuglicon rabble that turned out for their nomination. Some choice. You know, it’d nice if we the voters actually had a decent choice once in a while. But then, there rarely is much decent in politics.
What a cogent and concise recap of the GOP’s largely fictional talking points! You must have watched Fox News for an hour to get all that. Thanks for going there for us.
“Well, he is right. He is not going to connect with about 1/2 of the population. So he will not even try. No doubt they will be sorted out later. Take away benefits, lower minimum wage, make them work like Americans of the 19th century! Let them find charity.”-Minor disagreement, Baslim— He does not want to connect with that part of the population. Look how uncomfortable he was around Iowa voters. -He doesn’t try because he doesn’t want to be around them. And he’s not going to connect with them whether he’s elected or not.-And this is another 12 day old thread with Willard supporters expressing plenty of hatred toward Obama, but not one good thing to say about their candidate.
Frankly this cartoon would be more accurate if the two switched places. The mournfull face doesn’t go at all with the guy who ditched the security meeting and went off to do Letterman. As I count it, the only governments in the Muslim world even pretending to be our “friends” are Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UAE, all of which are prime candidates for overthrow with Obama’s blessing.
“It was Obama’s fault…” How you start all your posts? “Who approved that location which did NOT meet the security regs for such a post?”You think the President personally does or should approve the “security” location of diplomatic posts. And who said the “location” was a problem? Was that Fox or someone working for the RNC or the clown in the cartoon?
Now that the truth has come out (Senate Foreign Relations admits) that Obama KNEW it was a terrorist attack within 24 hours…and lied about it for weeks! The “Film” the Dem’s blame only had 2,000 hits when the attack occurred. Get it…? Obama stands at a podium in the cartoon, looking somber. HE HAS NOT HAD A NEWS CONFERENCE ABOUT IT YET! Nor does he have time to meet with Israel, But he has found the time to hang with The Pimp-With-A-Limp, JayZ, and the rest of the Braintrust…You must be proud. I, for one, am ashamed and embarrassed.
This cartoon has definitely been up long enough for everyone to realize, if not admit, that it doesn’t remotely fit the facts of the incident. But that’s normal for political cartoons, not just Oliphant’s. It would be nice if people would actually look at the Middle East, indeed the world at large, and realize that our position is far worse than when O took office. Our enemies sleep soundly (except for the stateless actors we take out with drones) and our few allies sleep fretfully wondering when their turn to be sold out will come. Who will be O’s fall guy in a second term? Still Bush?
Is anyone else concerned that the lack of new material may mean Mr. Oliphant is in distress? Vacations don’t normally go this long. Are health or family problems keeping him away?
Maybe he ended permission for drawings to appear on this site. I repeat myself but the longer this strip stays up the more obvious it is that Oliphant tagged the wrong guy as the clown in reaction to the Libya attack. I would think he would want to move on to better material for his team..
I think one more post might overload this page and send another lib toonists cherished bl;ather spot into critical mass and black-hole oblivion. Keep it up, people! Oliphant must go critical!
It’s interesting that Mitt Romney’s response to the terrorist attack in Benghazi was COMPLETELY accurate and correct, as opposed to Obama’s continued lies about it being all about a “video.” It’s really sad that Obama is more concerned about the fate of a muppet than the families of the dead men who he permitted to be rubbed-out in the streets of Benghazi, whom he insists upon lying to with BS about a “video.” The true clown currently occupies the White House.
Not sure but think this is the third time and the longest this year Oliphant has been with out a cartoon … this is the first year I’ve noticed these long absences I miss him, hope all is well.
It doesn’t get any better. From the AP: “Charlene R. Lamb, a deputy assistant secretary for diplomatic security, told lawmakers she refused requests for more security in Benghazi, saying the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate.” The department wanted WHAT? I was not aware we allowed the locals to be responsible for our diplomatic security anywhere in the world. Admittedly that security is probably minimal in “friendly” countries, but no Muslim country can remotely be considered friendly. And Benghazi is about as friendly as the worst parts of Pakistan.
Wow. This event happened a month ago and Faux News is still reporting it every hour on the hour, and every mindless conservative is still screaming about this imaginary failure of the Obama adminstration. Any person with a functioning brain knew a month ago there is no story here and it’s simply being clownishly used to score political points..It must be hard to keep up in Canada where the news is brought to you by pigeon.
Fox News is enraged that a moderator fact-checked Romney during the debate (about the Libya killings). As Colbert said, “The time for fact checking is after the debate, when the voters have stopped watching.” Romney must be allowed to lie freely, or he’s got nothing.
Even though this cartoon is a month old, it still tells the truth. Romney is still acting like a clown(although a disturbingly shape-shifting one). He has no plans totally us how his magic one-point plan is going to change the economic or foreign policy landscapes.. He still wants us all to believe in his faith-based economic plans.
Oliphants September 12, 2012 cartoon old, but no less true! Still as fresh as the day it was released. Hope all is well with Pat Oliphant and his associates..
I don’t know why this cartoon has been up for over a month now, but if that was a conscious decision, it was inspired. This cartoon says it all from beginning to end, especially after the three debates. In fact, in retrospect, Romney’s performance in the second and third debates is making his performance in the first debate looking like clowning as well.
According to GoComics themselves, he’s simply on vacation. But he took a month off earlier this year and I keep thinking there must be something else going on, to miss all these great chances during an election year. I hope he is actually perfectly healthy and merely taking a break (maybe to re-charge his batteries?)
John Hankey’s new online video, Romney Exposed, makes strong case that Romney and some US agents were involved in assassination of ambassador to Libya and other wrongs.
It doesn’t matter how long this stays up. Every blessed thing that has come out about Libya since the killings has painted Obama and his minions in a worse and worse light. And, to repeat yet again, it was overthrowing the leader of a non-threatening country that empowered the Al-Queda affiliated elements in that area to begin with. Yet I see that most who comment fully buy into this cartoon. And it certainly looks like being Clintonesque is going to work for Obama on this issue.
Young people should know that a liberal movement is under way in Europe to impose taxes on the internet. Oh, and Walrus, there was no surplus under Clinton. That was an accounting ruse.
Doesn’t seem quite so funny, now that the truth of the matter is coming out! Turns out Romney (even when misquoted) was right about the Embassy attack! Who’s wearing the clown suit now????
The election is well over. I believe it is time to become seriously concerned for Mr. Oliphant, GoComics’ reassurances not withstanding . To bob-lezeb : Hear! Hear! We miss you, Pat!
…has anyone else noticed that gocomics third-party advertisers introduce particularly virulent cookies and malware…
Can’t say as I have. By using Firefox, which simply does not support Active-X, together with Adblock Plus, NoScript (which disables Java) and DoNotTrackPlus (DNT+) add-ons, I’m able to surf the web with near impunity. Often times sites may load slowly as they try (unsuccessfully) to push ads and other stuff onto my computer, and a lot of times things like link buttons on a particular site won’t work unless I enable Java, and very occasionally I’ll have to use IE if Active-X is an absolute necessity. Some things, like commenting with Disqus, just will not work. Nevertheless, by using these tools, the worry and hassle factor from intrusive and aggressive tracking and dangerous exploits are reduced to an absolute minimum.
Where did all the people go who were bad mouthing the President? Looks like they dried up and blew away, just like all the money the Right wingnuts spent trying to buy the election…
The guy on the left is arguably responsible for the 4 deaths and is certainly covering something up, but it’s the OTHER guy who is a clown?Oliphant, come on, think this one through.
Went to Google for an explanation of Oliphant’s absence. Found this, in its entirety: Sep 12, 2012 – Hi GoComics readers, Many of you have expressed curiosity and even concern about the comic hiatus for Pat Oliphant’s drawings. We wanted …
Period. That’s it. Nothing more. Frustrating and I’m tempted to just drop him.
’Political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, a Santa Fe resident, has been named a resident of the American Academy in Rome.
‘This means he won’t be doing any cartoons for 10 weeks starting Sept. 17. Oliphant’s work frequently is published on the New Mexican’s editorial page.’
M1%TT was a blunderer on foreign policy issues – he proved it long before the election by angering the Russians and the British. During the debates, he showed his shortcomings. Our ambassadors in the Middle East are all prone to kill-crazy Arabs, unfortunately. Stevens knew what he might be in for. His family knew it, also. What’s even WORSE is that 241 MARINES under Reagan were blown up on a Marine base in Lebanon and 3,000 Americans were killed on 9/11, just months after Dumbya STOLE the ’00 election and subsequently IGNORED all reports of a forthcoming al-Queda attack on U.S. soil. Do the math, righties.
@Murphy, Hitler was no APOLOGIST for WWI and then began WWII with EVEN MORE atrocities committed by Germans. After that, other Germans had TO APOLOGIZE for Hitler. Give me a THINKING president, who assesses and reassesses rather than a bloodthirsty, narrowminded dictator or a gunslinger alcoholic cowboy. Obama got bin Laden through strength and wise decision-making. Dumbya FAILed to get bin Laden, FAILed to find wmd’s, FAILed to watch over Wall St. greed/mismanagement, and FAILed to win EITHER WAR. Your point is….???

And who said the “location” was a problem? Was that Fox or someone working for the RNC or the clown in the cartoon?
DenBow about 11 years ago
I, for one, am ashamed and embarrassed.
dennis17 about 11 years ago
This cartoon has definitely been up long enough for everyone to realize, if not admit, that it doesn’t remotely fit the facts of the incident. But that’s normal for political cartoons, not just Oliphant’s. It would be nice if people would actually look at the Middle East, indeed the world at large, and realize that our position is far worse than when O took office. Our enemies sleep soundly (except for the stateless actors we take out with drones) and our few allies sleep fretfully wondering when their turn to be sold out will come. Who will be O’s fall guy in a second term? Still Bush?
kamwick about 11 years ago
Keep repeating that. Maybe some day you’ll actually really believe that.
Kip W about 11 years ago
Yes. “flake-67122” would have been overdoing it.
denzil42 about 11 years ago
Is anyone else concerned that the lack of new material may mean Mr. Oliphant is in distress? Vacations don’t normally go this long. Are health or family problems keeping him away?
Kip W about 11 years ago
Seriously, I’ve Googled his name a time or two. No indication of anything going on. If anybody else finds anything, I’d like to know about it.
dennis17 about 11 years ago
Maybe he ended permission for drawings to appear on this site. I repeat myself but the longer this strip stays up the more obvious it is that Oliphant tagged the wrong guy as the clown in reaction to the Libya attack. I would think he would want to move on to better material for his team..
38lowell about 11 years ago
It’s been three weeks-how much longer must we look at this cartoon?
Kip W about 11 years ago
Better not defend Mitt too much until you’re sure he won’t suddenly retract the statement.
adherent#1 about 11 years ago
I think one more post might overload this page and send another lib toonists cherished bl;ather spot into critical mass and black-hole oblivion. Keep it up, people! Oliphant must go critical!
babsbybend about 11 years ago
Did Oliphant get sick, or have a stroke, or quit, or die, or what? I’ve checked other websites, and they all have this same old thing.
walruscarver2000 about 11 years ago
The more speculation about the drawing the more cheap shots we seem to get from the right. I’ll bet your mothers are proud.
Ivan Araque about 11 years ago
Let me add my name to Mr. Oliphant’s well-wishers. I love his work, his insight, his candor. We all hope he’s fine and back soon.
yohannbiimu about 11 years ago
It’s interesting that Mitt Romney’s response to the terrorist attack in Benghazi was COMPLETELY accurate and correct, as opposed to Obama’s continued lies about it being all about a “video.” It’s really sad that Obama is more concerned about the fate of a muppet than the families of the dead men who he permitted to be rubbed-out in the streets of Benghazi, whom he insists upon lying to with BS about a “video.” The true clown currently occupies the White House.

I find it hard to believe that Oliphant hasn’t drawn a cartoon in an entire month. Anybody awake at this place??
Las Maracas about 11 years ago
Not wise. Not wise at all.

Did Oliphant die? No new cartoons in over a month?
jimsizemore1405 about 11 years ago
Not sure but think this is the third time and the longest this year Oliphant has been with out a cartoon … this is the first year I’ve noticed these long absences I miss him, hope all is well.
dennis17 about 11 years ago
It doesn’t get any better. From the AP: “Charlene R. Lamb, a deputy assistant secretary for diplomatic security, told lawmakers she refused requests for more security in Benghazi, saying the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate.” The department wanted WHAT? I was not aware we allowed the locals to be responsible for our diplomatic security anywhere in the world. Admittedly that security is probably minimal in “friendly” countries, but no Muslim country can remotely be considered friendly. And Benghazi is about as friendly as the worst parts of Pakistan.

Seen this cartoon for a month—is Oliphant OK?
sw10mm about 11 years ago
Wow. This event happened a month ago and Faux News is still reporting it every hour on the hour, and every mindless conservative is still screaming about this imaginary failure of the Obama adminstration. Any person with a functioning brain knew a month ago there is no story here and it’s simply being clownishly used to score political points..It must be hard to keep up in Canada where the news is brought to you by pigeon.
csavage56 about 11 years ago

I think someone should check this guy’s apartment-this cartoon has been up too long.
Luxurylife about 11 years ago
Hey Pat Oliphant, when Romney wins you can take your "hes a clown " statement and shove it up your cartoonist you know what.
Kip W about 11 years ago
Fox News is enraged that a moderator fact-checked Romney during the debate (about the Libya killings). As Colbert said, “The time for fact checking is after the debate, when the voters have stopped watching.” Romney must be allowed to lie freely, or he’s got nothing.
38lowell about 11 years ago
Is this cartoon on it’s second month?
Cat43ullus about 11 years ago
When in doubt, read the top of the page. Gocomics marketing tells us that Pat is on vacation and is doing well, so no reason to be alarmed.

Calling Pat Oliphant, calling Pat Oliphant………..
kamwick about 11 years ago
Even though this cartoon is a month old, it still tells the truth. Romney is still acting like a clown(although a disturbingly shape-shifting one). He has no plans totally us how his magic one-point plan is going to change the economic or foreign policy landscapes.. He still wants us all to believe in his faith-based economic plans.
fi10zrd about 11 years ago
Is POliphant on vacation? sick leave? sabbatical? witness protection? - this piece is so ancient by now.

i can’t believe that oliphant would pass up this election year and take a “vacation” of over one month. what’s going on?
38lowell about 11 years ago

Let me guess: Pat’s sitting out this election. Couldn’t take it anymore.Actually, I can’t say that I blame him.
nimbleswitch about 11 years ago
I don’t know why this cartoon has been up for over a month now, but if that was a conscious decision, it was inspired. This cartoon says it all from beginning to end, especially after the three debates. In fact, in retrospect, Romney’s performance in the second and third debates is making his performance in the first debate looking like clowning as well.
bobeaux about 11 years ago
I hope Pat Oliphant is OK. Over a month with no new strip – I need a fix…..
Kip W about 11 years ago
We’ll get a new strip when this one stops being timely and relevant, then.
fi10zrd about 11 years ago
Is PO out for the season? This is dated 9/12/12
Godfreydaniel about 11 years ago
According to GoComics themselves, he’s simply on vacation. But he took a month off earlier this year and I keep thinking there must be something else going on, to miss all these great chances during an election year. I hope he is actually perfectly healthy and merely taking a break (maybe to re-charge his batteries?)
38lowell about 11 years ago
You really should check his apartment. This has run too long. Unless he was fired.
WFhobbyfarm about 11 years ago
Oliphant hasn’t posted a comic for more than a month – anybody know why?
joefriendly about 11 years ago
John Hankey’s new online video, Romney Exposed, makes strong case that Romney and some US agents were involved in assassination of ambassador to Libya and other wrongs.
dennis17 about 11 years ago
It doesn’t matter how long this stays up. Every blessed thing that has come out about Libya since the killings has painted Obama and his minions in a worse and worse light. And, to repeat yet again, it was overthrowing the leader of a non-threatening country that empowered the Al-Queda affiliated elements in that area to begin with. Yet I see that most who comment fully buy into this cartoon. And it certainly looks like being Clintonesque is going to work for Obama on this issue.
Liamon about 11 years ago

Period. That’s it. Nothing more. Frustrating and I’m tempted to just drop him.

Mystery solved, apparently:
’Oliphant named academy resident

What’s even WORSE is that 241 MARINES under Reagan were blown up on a Marine base in Lebanon and 3,000 Americans were killed on 9/11, just months after Dumbya STOLE the ’00 election and subsequently IGNORED all reports of a forthcoming al-Queda attack on U.S. soil. Do the math, righties.
slumgully almost 11 years ago
