In Icelandic, the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper are called the Big Bear and the Little Bear. I think “dipper” is a more descirptive name, since they don’t look at all like bears.
The dippers are called astorisms, a recognizable pattern that’s part of a constellation. In summer, Scorpio and Sagittarius show asterisms of a stinger and a teapot.
“Dippers” used to be more commonly known when many of us used to share them to drink water. I believe they still exist, although more often we use “ladles” to dip liquids that we don’t drink from.
