There’s this Chinese idiom, “covering your ears and stealing the bell,” meaning you’re not kidding anyone but yourself. A thief tries to smash a rich guy’s bell to steal it piece by piece, but it makes a loud sound when he hits it. Therefore, he plugs his ears so that he can’t hear the sound of the bell, and starts smashing away. Needless to say, everyone else heard that sound and he was busted. Seems applicable in this situation.
As a college student my roommate and I lived for 4 months with a family who had a sweet little six year old girl and three year old boy who was a monster. Monster knew how to suck up to Mumsy and torture everyone else. He pulled hair, slapped, scratched, threw things when he didn’t get his way etc. And yet Mumsy thought he was such an angel. (He was physically beautiful, he looked like a Murillo Christ Child. Maybe that was it.) When we were getting ready to leave, we bought the monster a tin drum. I hope he drove Mumsy nuts.
My father gave my Brother’s son a toy fireman’s helmet with a flashing light and siren, that the kid loved it, but drove his Mother nuts! Next time we visited it was found on top of the refrigerator out of the kid’s reach!

Singing sounds better in the shower; drumming sounds better with earmuffs!
