Schroeder asks, "Would you say, 'If I Were King' or would you say, 'If I Was King'?"(BR) (BR) Charlie Brown replies, "I think you would properly say, 'If I Were King'..."(BR) (BR) He continues, "Of course if you really wanted to, you could say, 'If I Was King'..."(BR) (BR) He concludes, "But then if you were the kind who said, 'If I Was King', you'd probably never get to Be king!" Schroeder looks at the reader.(BR) (BR)

So, we were well into losing the subjunctive as far back as 1957. So sad, as it’s useful.
