We saw the first Indiana Jones (Temple of Doom) movie, in the theater, when my youngest daughter had to keep the seat part up to sit on, in order to be able to see. And that’s what she decided to be, an archeologist. Today she has her Masters and is a registered, certified archeologist. Never underestimate dreams and determination.
There is already a book published by figure skater, Kristi Yamaguchi, that is entilted: “Dream Big Little Pig”. It’s available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Big-Little-Pig-inspiring/dp/1728252598/ref=asc_df_1728252598/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=564824089097&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16387512862687161212&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9012242&hvtargid=pla-1570682836211&psc=1®ion_id=674469
Yes and no. I’d love to be a Major League Centerfielder, but the fact that I’m in my 60s and have never been very good at baseball really DOES make it very unlikely.
While I am all for encouragement, we still have to be realistic. If someone can’t sing, no amount of “You can do it!” is going to fix that. Only working at it can.
I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do, but one day when I was about ten, I watched my father do something I thought was very brave, acting instantly to keep a man’s car from running off a cliff. It was actually not as hazardous as I thought, but it required instant recognition and quick action. And it shaped my life. I wanted to do things like that. I tried other things, but in the end, I got it all, firefighter, paramedic, deputy sheriff and police detective.
Meh. The super-hero movie has had it’s moment in time. Like the westerns of yore, people have had their fill of the men-in-tights genre! Time for something new. (And I say that as formerly huge fan of the MCU.)
And then Rat comes along and hijacks Pig’s comic strip, turning it into Dream Crusher Rat, who tells the kid to listen to everyone else and not follow his dream.
There is a depressing and pessimistic message hiden in plain view in this comic, though. All of this points to say that this kid will achieve his dream career when pigs fly…
It’s surprising how negative friends and family can be, and how many years we can waste doing what we are ‘suppose’ to be doing. And then, not doing what we truly want to do.
When I did career counseling, I always told people that it was great that they wanted to be whatever. However, I also encouraged them to research the career in depth to see if the reality was what they imagined it to be. Then, I encouraged them to see how their interests and abilities would mesh with that career. I loved the idea of being a homicide detective until I saw how dangerous it could be, and all the paperwork it entailed. Had I gone into it without doing any research, I wouldn’t have lasted very long.
Kids need a lot more of DBS, and a lot less (as in “none”) of the “you showed up, you breathed, and we gave you a phony award” philosophy that has floated to the top of educational psychology.
Plan it out, step by step — get some positive but sound advice on it — and be prepared to work hard at it, because you love it and you know it is worth it.

Turns out, what I grew up to love was something considerably different than either of them.
