Come to think of it, I don’t know any ’Earl’’s either, so don’t feel so bad Opal :)……both your names are unpopular….

Is Opal the female version of Opie?

And fortunately Opal can’t nag them into naming their kids after her, like she can nag Earl.

Moon Pie is a good name.

How about Bertha

You don’t see many Pearls, Rubys or Beryls either, so maybe people just don’t like gems any more.

Oh, yeah, be kind to yourself, Opal.

Just don’t name your daughters Earl.

Speaking as another who was born in October, the problem is that the opal has been discontinued as the birthstone. Can you imagine anyone naming their daughter Rose Zircon?

Well, maybe people will start naming their baby girls LAPO.

What happened to names like. Bob, Tom, Bill, Ann, Barbara, Nancy… ETC.

All names go through trends. I’m so sick of all the Caitlins, Madisons, Cadens, Coltons, Tylers, and Taylors I could puke.

My Mother’s name was Opal, too. She was named after her Aunt and absolutely HATED her name.

Yeah. My middle name is “Harvey”. It’s always bugged me, and I’ve asked my mom more than once what the heck they were thinking when they chose it — the only answer I ever got was, “Would you have preferred Herman?” Apparently the goal was something starting with “H”…and I guess it could have been worse!

Just be glad you weren’t named Chastity.

I have known two named Earlene and one Earla. Oscar is another endangered species despite two Hamersteins (impresario and lyricist), Levant (interpreter of Gershwin), Neymeier (architect of Brasilia), Mayer (meat products) and a prestigious cinematic award. Is Madison (Odd Couple) the reason?

Opal is a lovely name…

The stone on rings and bracelets are really beautiful also.

It’s a waste of a good name !!!!!!!

I wonder if when in school, Earl was called ‘Earl the Pearl’, like me.

I’ve always wondered why some gems are names and others not, anyway….

Opal and Pearl are sisters in this strip…

those are both considered too old-fashioned now, and probably so is Beryl, along with Emerald, the name of a 90-year-old lady I met.

But Ruby is acceptable as a “retro” name, while Amber, Jade, and sometimes Jet are fairly common and modern.

If you named your daughter Cinnabar, or maybe Sapphire (?) it might be considered hip, but almost nobody is named Turquoise, Lapis or Diamond…. or Quartz.

Same with months…..

Why are May and June old-fashioned women’s names,

March and August men’s names,

And April and even September accepted as modern girl’s names?

And why are January, February, July and the rest not usually names at all?

BTW Hsaw — I always figured your name was Earl! LOL
