If he had married a supermodel, what would have been different? 50 years later, she would look like Opal.

Who would want to marry anyone famous, let alone a supermodel, with the hassles that would entail?

I like to think about “alternative lives” occasionally. What would have happened if I hadn’t decided to move to this country from Europe for example? Or not have married? It gets mind-boggling, how every small decision would change everything.

There is nothing quite like having a spouse you want to connect with who has either a newspaper covering their face or is staring at a TV with their jaw hanging down and you want to count the flies that might enter the void.

My first wife and I had an amicable divorce more than 40 years ago. It was gratifying to hear her say in a recent phone conversation that she doesn’t regret anything. I told her I felt the same.

Getting married to the first wife. Then again, the divorce led me to return to Edinburgh to see The Fringe and there I met the lady who eventually, about 8 years later, became my second wife and we are still going strong 27 years later.
