my in-laws and our family all phone each other regularly. my sister’s family hasn’t so much. she hasn’t spoken to me, not even xmas cards, in years, and i haven’t a clue why. i even accidentally learned her daughter married—new years, 2023. count your blessings.
Hey!! “Thank you” is a Canadian thing!! We say it all the time even for the idiot who cut us off in traffic. Better to say that than pull a gun and shoot the guy like one moron at the border told me he would do.
Coincidentally, I was watching an episode of Everyone loves Raymond, yesterday. Marie keeps reminding newly wed Amy to send out thank you notes. More MIL abuse.
As someone who spent most of his working life programming computers, this arc makes me very uncomfortable. Anything to do with endless loops gives me the heebie-jeebies.
You hear it all the time on radio interviews (and probably TV and elsewhere), dueling “thank you”s. The host thanks the guest for appearing. The guest says “no, thank you.” I find this incredibly rude, and so common. The guest is not accepting the thanks of the host for appearing on their show. My mother taught me the proper response to “thank you” was “you’re welcome.”

In Japan, a thank you gift should be one half the cost of the gift you originally received.
This is called okaeshi (お返し) which translates as ‘return gift.’
Interestingly, okaeshi can also be translated as ‘revenge.’
