My husband proposed to me during peak foliage. It was October 16, 1982; 8 days after my 18th birthday (which is why I remember it so well). He drove me to a spot off the beaten path. There was a little river with lots of rocks, hundreds of trees – all in full color – and lots of little critters. It was beautiful, albeit COLD. We had a picnic sitting in the back of his Renault R5 (back seat down, hatch open). When the song “Hold Me” by Fleetwood Mac (our song) came on, he proposed. When I said yes, he walked over to the river & pulled out a bottle of champagne that he had chilling in it, tied to shore with stout wire.

Here in South Texas we get color changes too as autumn comes, but the colors aren’t nearly so bright.

I guess the New Hampshire motto, “Life Free or Die,” doesn’t apply to New Yorkers.

Go down to Jenkins barn, turn right. Go down that road 2 – 3 miles until you get to where the old hot dog stand used to be and turn left.
