    There’s a very insightful recent book — “The Shallows” — that basically argues that every advance in imformation technology over the centuries has made our brains lazier and less physically capable of sustained analytical thought. The Internet, the greatest such advance since Gutenberg’s printing press, has seriously advanced the process. And hence this strip.

    I disagree. Compassion, and social action, for others is at the heart of the gospel. Jesus left no room for argument: “What you did for the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you did for me.”

    I think the classical response would be that wisdom is good in itself, for living a good and happy life and for making the lives of those around you better and happier, without considering whether your wisdom survives your physical existence.

    More completely, “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.” Since “Hell is truth learned too late”, perhaps ignorance is always bliss. (But then, I’m just a discouraged old guy.)
