Shellie was my ‘service cat’ who helped me stay calm when I got her in 2009 from a cage in Petco Oro Valley AZ. I was still in ‘recovery’ from Shingles pain & paralysis from left knee down through sides, top, & bottom of foot. Saw our primary doctor on a Wednesday when I had severe pain in my leg he thought were just muscle spasms. That afternoon blisters came down my back & left leg covering sides top & bottom of left foot. When I saw him on Friday doctor made a near ‘fatal mistake’ giving me the shingle shot 72 hours after the blisters had arrived. Shellie stay with me every night. However in 2013 I had major back surgery to relieve sciatica. Told Shellie couldn’t sleep in bed with me for 3 days or so. I closed the bedroom door, but had no idea she was in the room. I got in bed & heard her questioning meow. Got up too quickly, spun around & sat down had on my tail bone. Didn’t damage the fusion at L5, but X ray indicated I had a fracture in one lower back bone. When everything had healed I was glad to have Shellie with me through the night . But last February X ray showed Shellie had a large growth in her stomach & surgery was ‘iffy’. She had gone from a 8 pound cat to 4 pounds. My wife, Sandy & I both had our hands on her when she was euthanized.

Brought up in Chatham NJ. Near Bell Labs in 1940s. My Father was a top Engineer in WE, & became one of the Superintendents in the New WE plant in Allentown PA. Most kids in my Chatham NJ grade school had parent in Bell Labs or some form of science oriented occupations.

I loved my Raleigh 3 speed bike I had in 1950!

Had quite an audience one winter day when my 1951 Hillman Minx convertible’s starter quit, & the foreign car service I used said it would take a week to get a new one. It was a cold Kansas City winter day. Fortunately the Hillman came with a hand crank. Raised the hood so I could tweak the Carburetor when it seemed to start. Cranked it several times & the 4 cylinder engine stirred to life.. then held the throttle part on the carburetor until the motor set in a high idle. Nobody had ever seen someone crank a car to start it. The crown watching cheered!

Some one remarked you must be from New York when they watch my wife & I stop, & look both ways before stepping off a side walk. Here in NW Tucson folks just walk into a supermarket parking lot with out looking, & sometimes with cell phone to face.

One sultry summer in Chatham NJ I heard the sound of an ice cream vendor. Loved the twin ‘bomb popsicles’. Had a siren attached to the frame next to front tire. Pull a chain & it rubbed against the tire. Almost sounded like a cop car. Chased the vendor down nearly a block away. A crowd of other kids in the neighborhood heard the siren & followed me. Vendor really liked my act!

Drove from Overland Park KS in 1966 in my new 1965 Volvo 122s with my wife & 2 young sons to visit my parents in Summit NJ. Surprised that I could fill the gas tank myself. Attendant was a bit gruff as I hovered nearby. I didn’t let him clean the windows or check the oil.

She is our last cat, we are too old & disabled to adopt either a cat or dog.
