My standard response is, “I don’t know.” When they ask why I then quip, “well, if you don’t know, how am I supposed to?”

The first car was opened in Detroit, MI in 1914.

Automation started happening in the 1940’s.

You are indeed correct, sir, in that presumption, and the sole person in years to have a clue about the derivation.

“Furyo Gaijin.” As my Japanese friends used to tell me, “Foreign Barbarian Master Criminal.” Or something like that.

They’d giggle the Japanese phrase to each other whenever I was around and others within earshot would lose their “legendary inscrutability” and laugh out loud.

That I laughed as well helped dispel the myth of the “Rude, Ugly American” many Japanese still hold. Trying to badly say things in very butchered Japanese didn’t hurt either. I’ve forgotten so much of my Pidgin Japanese.

I was in the US Navy when TQM began its slow march in the US.

Being a mid-level Enlisted (E4-E5) I constantly had to attend lectures and seminars and workshops where the sole benefit was getting a mini-vacation, on and off base, from being on duty.

To say it was a waste of time and resources would be a polite way of not using some choice Sailor-eze.
