“Fish are pretty to look at, but they don’t interact with you.”

I have to disagree with you on that one. I’ve bought several “feeder goldfish” for our outdoor pond over the years. They’ve grown up to behave almost like dogs. They get really excited when I come around whether it’s feeding time or not. If I’ve had to put one in the “hospital tank”, I’ll get splashed as I walk by, then I know he’s well enough to go back out to the pond. A few have liked being stroked/petted.

I’d love to be able to afford some real Japanese Koi!

I like how Sophie’s Woman says, “It’s really hard to lose _someone.”_

She doesn’t say, “It’s really hard to lose a pet.”

Hubby and I feel the same way.

“You can’t build your happiness on someone else’s pain.”

Unfortunately, there are some who do. There is even a name for that:

Schadenfreude (/ˈʃɑːdənfrɔɪdə/; German: [ˈʃaːdn̩ˌfʁɔʏ̯də]; lit. Tooltip literal translation “harm-joy”) is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, pain, suffering, or humiliation of another.

“Every once in a while, one of my ears changes tunes.”

I call it the “hearing test noise”. It’s a very high pitched and constant sound. I get that you’d compare it to the “Song of the Cicada”.

Sometimes, a I’ll hear an additional tone; a lower pitch on top of the standard sound, maybe like a flute? but still with a hearing test quality to it.

I wouldn’t know what to do if I had a few moments of perfect quiet!

Wow! I’ve never seen a blanket of lightening bugs! I’ve seen them flying, but not doing syncretized flashing, just each one flashing the pattern it was born to.

I’ve lived in north and south Alabama – saw between some and many, Texas – saw none, New Jersey – saw very few, and South Carolina – last time we saw them was in the late 1990’s.
