Patty was the only work I got royalties on for reprints- ’cause I wound those characters. I was sent a Spanish language edition of the mag with one of my strips in it. I can read enough Spanish to enjoy seeing how they translated it.

Do you know which strip that was?

Rereading it, I recall that ‘snorebore’ was a name my brothers and I used to use when we were kids. Cornamm’s photo may also have been inspired by a memory of one I had seen in the 70s in ADVERTISING AGE, a magazine my Dad, who worked in the industry, got.

I wrote this based on a man I used to see on the bus every morning. One morning, I overheard him talking to a fellow passenger about how meaningless his job was- yet he was an executive. He knew he’d only been given a title and an office to fill a space on the corporate letterhead. He was bored and unfulfilled. This was the early 80s, and there was a recession a few years later. I read about a big corporate VP who had to to give up his large home, move his family into a modest place, and he ended up pumping gas. I wondered about what happened to man on the bus and his ‘job.’

His name, of course, was not really Cornamm W. Blank VIII, I made that up. But he could have been him. I deliberately made Cornamm’s photo blurry to fit the story of his life.

This is the last of the Profile series that I created so far. All of them were based to some degree on reality, exaggerated for comic effect.

For years I was a style mimic for Nickelodeon Magazine and Cartoon Network Comics. It’s still kinda fun.

I first did an Olivia shortly after she took over the strip, in a Sunday for April 29, 2018. Her style looked different at first, so I was going for the look it had then. If you check it out, I hope it shows that I liked what she was doing, and was criticizing the critics.

I guess we were counting on generations of this kind of dialogue giving it recognizability. A sarcastic response to a stupid statement seemed natural. Like Al Jaffee’s “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions” in MAD, which we spoofed right here in this feature. I hope people aren’t reading a word at a time, instead of taking in the meaning behind the words. When I read, I imagine the tone of voice, and I read the facial expression if one is shown.
