Set reasonable goals, sure, but there’s a difference between “you can always get better” and “you can never do enough”; all too often, the latter leads to burnout and/or failure. This is particularly true when parents decided to “manage” their kids’ athletic careers without asking the kids what they want from sports; I’ve seen middle school athletes quit their sport because their parents and/or coaches have basically ground them underfoot.
It’s quite plausible that Rodney could go through a professional tryout while retaining amateur status and HS eligibility.
NFHS puts eligibility rules in the hands of each state’s governing body. In my state, Kentucky, mere tryouts do not affect one’s amateur status or eligibility; however, signing a professional contract in a particular sport renders an athlete ineligible in that sport.
Yup – the C-J’s owner, Gannett, basically forced all of their 200+ papers to choose from a selection of (at the time) 34 comic strips for the “redesigned” comics page.
